Xavier tops @NKUNorseBSB on Tuesday

CINCINNATI - The Northern Kentucky University baseball team fell to Xavier on Tuesday afternoon by a final score of 14-3. Xavier moves to 18-34 on the year, and NKU drops to 14-35.
 
AT THE PLATE  
ON THE MOUND
  • Jordan Menfee got the start and took the loss on the mound. He allowed eight runs on seven hits.
  • Kyle Service pitched 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing just three hits.
  • Gunnar Barnard held Xavier scoreless in the fourth inning.  
  • Chris Barber came out of the bullpen to pitch two innings. He allowed two runs (both unearned) on two hits.
  • Andrew Sabrosky pitched two innings and gave up four runs on five hits.
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • NKU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. With two outs in the frame, Mercurio singled to left field, and he scored on an RBI double by Roberts.
  • Xavier scored eight runs in the bottom of the first to go ahead 8-1. The Musketeers hit three home runs in the frame.
  • Xavier added two runs in the bottom of the sixth on Ryan Altenberger's single to extend the lead to 10-1.
  • In the top of the seventh, Haueter hit a two-run homer to make the score 10-3. Moffatt scored on the play, as he singled earlier in the inning.  
  • The Musketeers crossed the plate four times in the bottom of the eighth to take a 14-3 lead. Altenberger drove in two runs with a single, and he scored on an RBI groundout. In the next at-bat, Nate Soria hit a solo home run.
 
 
NORSE NOTES
  • Haueter has reached base in 27-consecutive games. He also recorded his 18th multi-hit game of the season.
  • Mercurio is now on a nine-game hitting streak, which leads the team.
  • Xavier had 18 hits in the contest, and NKU had seven.
  • The Norse committed three errors, and the Musketeers had one.

  • NKU is set to play Wright State on Thursday, May 17 at 6:30 p.m. The game will be played at Fifth Third Field, the home of the Dayton Dragons, a minor league affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.
