GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team opened up the Horizon League schedule with a 2-1 win over Green Bay on Saturday afternoon. The Norse are 5-3 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Phoenix fall to 2-7 on the season and 0-1 in the Horizon League.
"Many of the concepts that we have implemented in training were executed nicely today," said NKU head coach
Bob Sheehan. "It is a great result any time you go on the road in the Horizon League and come away with three points. Overall, a terrific start to conference play."
NKU SCORING SUMMARY
- Emily Soltes put the Norse ahead 1-0 in the 27th minute. Taylor Spaulding played a free kick into the box. Shawna Zaken headed the ball back to Soltes, and she fired a shot into the upper left corner to give NKU the lead.
- Zaken gave the Norse a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute. A ball played up the field by Ally Perkins was secured by Samantha Duwel, and she played a cross on the ground to Zaken. She tapped in her shot from inside the box to double the lead.
BETWEEN THE POSTS
- Emily Lohmann played the entire match and made two saves. She now has 34 saves on the year.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- Zaken fired a shot on goal for the Norse in the ninth minute, but her attempt was saved by the Green Bay goalkeeper.
- Lohmann made a nice save in the 11th minute to prevent the Phoenix from getting on the scoreboard.
- Perkins' shot in the 13th minute was stopped by the Green Bay goalkeeper.
- The Norse earned a corner kick in the 19th minute, and had a good chance to score, but Chloe Mills' header attempt was just wide of the goal.
- Perkins had another shot on goal saved in the 19th minute.
- Soltes gave the Norse a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.
- The Green Bay goalkeeper made a save on Perkins' shot attempt in the 28th minute.
- In the 38th minute, Kailey Ivins looked to score for NKU, but her attempt bounced off of the cross bar and out of play.
- Soltes nearly scored again in the 40th minute. Erin Sutton played a cross from the right side into the box, but Soltes' header just missed the frame.
- The Norse had a 12-6 shot advantage, which included a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- Duwel took a shot on goal in the 52nd minute from inside the box, but the Green Bay goalkeeper was there to make the save.
- Zaken nearly beat the keeper in the 54th minute, but her shot attempt was stopped.
- The Phoenix recorded a shot on frame in the 56th minute, but Lohmann made an easy save to keep Green Bay off of the scoreboard.
- Zaken gave the Norse a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute.
- Ivins almost extended the lead in the 68th minute, but her shot hit off of the crossbar.
- Green Bay recorded a goal in the 80th minute to make the score 2-1. McKayla Kertscher dribbled the ball near the end line, and she passed the ball to Alycia Wright. Wright fired a shot to the lower right corner of the net from the inside of the box.
- NKU had a 7-3 advantage in shots during the period.
MATCH NOTES
- The Norse finished the match with a 19-9 shot advantage, including a 10-3 mark in shots on goal.
- NKU also had three corner kicks, compare to none for Green Bay.
- Soltes and Zaken each recorded their third goals of the season.
- The Norse improve to 19-5-4 all-time in Horizon League play.
