@NKUNorseVB clinches Cougar Classic crown with five-setter over Oral Roberts

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Northern Kentucky volleyball extended its winning streak to six matches with a five-set victory over Oral Roberts in the final match of the Cougar Classic. It marks the second time this season that NKU has won a five-set match after dropping the first two sets. The Norse move to 8-3 overall while the Golden Eagles fall to 3-9. Following the tournament, senior outside hitter Haley Libs was named the MVP while sophomore libero Ashton Terrill also earned all-tournament honors.

First Set Summary
  • Oral Roberts connected at a .308 clip in the opening set while holding NKU to a .122 hitting percentage.
  • The Golden Eagles gained control early on, using a string of errors to pull ahead, 15-9, and retain the lead.
  • Libs and Bailey Western led the Norse with three kills apiece, while Anna Brinkmann led the defense with four digs.

Second Set Summary
  • NKU established an early lead, 7-2, but the Golden Eagles were able to close the gap and claw their way back into the set, eventually tying it up at 18-18.
  • A pair of Norse errors allowed Oral Roberts to hold off two set points before two kills and an NKU miscue gave ORU the two-point win.
  • Libs and Western were once again strong for the Norse with a combined nine kills and no errors on 24 swings.

Third Set Summary
  • The third had a similar start to the second set, but when the Golden Eagles tied it up after closing a substantial gap, the Norse answered back with a string of runs that allowed NKU to pull ahead for good.
  • NKU went on a five-point run to take a 22-17 lead, which would keep the Golden Eagles at arm's distance while the Norse went on to take the third.
  • Western added four more kills on eight attempts, as did Miranda Wucherer. Terrill led the back row efforts with six digs in the frame and Shelby Olsen had two aces in the set.

Fourth Set Summary
  • NKU started in a 4-0 hole and took an early timeout before going on a 7-3 run to knot the contest up.
  • The Norse gained control of the set thanks to strong serving from Maddy Weber, Terrill and Wucherer at the end of the game as the trio strung together a 12-3 run to end the set.
  • Weber had three of NKU's five ace in the set, while Libs had four kills to pace the offense with a .571 hitting percentage.
  • Terrill had another strong set in the back row, scooping up eight digs.

Fifth Set Summary
  • NKU and ORU traded points for the entirety of the deciding frame, and three Golden Eagle errors as well as a kill from Natalie Hardig caused Oral Roberts to call the timeout with a 10-8 NKU lead.
  • Terrill gave NKU match point with an ace before Libs delivered the final blow with a kill. Libs went four-for-eight in the fifth set and three of her kills came in the final six points of the match.

Norse Notes
  • NKU served up 14 aces, which are the second-most aces in a single match since the Norse transitioned to Division I. The performance is topped only by 15 aces in an outing against Saint Peter's on Aug. 24, 2012, which was NKU's first-ever Division I match.
  • Libs registered 18 kills at a .320 hitting percentage and added 13 digs. She now has 1,296 career kills and moved up to the No. 11 spot on NKU's all-time kills list.
  • Western added a career-best 14 kills, connecting at a .448 clip, and also added an ace and two blocks.
  • Peytton Bagwell led the Norse at the net with five blocks, while Laura Crawford chipped in four.
  • Wucherer had a rounded stat line with 23 assists, 13 digs, eight kills, four blocks and a pair of aces.
  • Terrill led the back row with 23 digs to go with three aces, and Brinkmann rounded out NKU's double-digit defenders with 18 digs.
  • Weber tied her career mark from the service line with four aces.
