@NKUNorseWBB closes out 2019 with road win at Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Northern Kentucky women's basketball closed out the decade with a 61-49 road win at Milwaukee on Monday evening, moving the Norse to 7-6 on the season and 1-1 in Horizon League play. The Panthers fall to 4-9 (1-1 Horizon).

STATS LEADERS
  • Four Norse registered double digits, led by Molly Glick's 14 points.
  • Emmy Souder and Taylor Clos both added 11 points, with Clos going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.
  • Ally Niece chipped in 10 points, six assists and five rebounds.
  • Kailey Coffey led NKU with 12 rebounds, also scoring six points.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • The Norse got on the board early and never trailed for the rest of the half after the 7:09 mark, when a free throw from Souder gave NKU a 5-4 advantage. NKU closed the first quarter on an 8-2 run to lead by nine, 19-10. NKU shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the opening quarter.
  • Following a slight run by the Panthers that brought Milwaukee within four points, Coffey answered with back-to-back layups to put the Norse ahead, 25-17.
  • The Panthers improved their efficiency in the second quarter, but NKU was able to maintain the lead going into the halftime break, 31-24.
  • Niece led the Norse with eight points while Glick had seven. NKU spread its offense out well with seven of the nine players on the court scoring in the first half.
  • NKU had a 16-10 advantage in the paint and also outscored the Panthers off turnovers, 6-3. Northern Kentucky committed just five miscues in the opening half while forcing Milwaukee into nine turnovers.    
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • Milwaukee was able to chip away at the score and take the lead at 40-38 with 2:33 to play in the third quarter. However, NKU took the lead back thanks to a pull-up jumper from Ivy Turner and a 3-pointer from Clos before the period's close.
  • The Panthers got within three points with 8:49 to play, but NKU used back-to-back threes from Glick and Clos, along with two free throws from Niece, to extend out to a double-digit lead. Milwaukee did not come within more than eight points of the Norse for the remainder of the contest and shot 20.0 percent in the fourth quarter.
  •  The Norse dominated the boards in the second half, outrebounding Milwaukee 22-12.
GAME NOTES
  • NKU shot 23-for-54 from the field for 42.6 percent while Milwaukee shot 19-for-51 for 37.3 percent.
  • Thanks to the second-half rebounding effort, the Norse posted a 37-28 advantage on the glass.
  • The Norse also had the edge in the paint, 24-16.
UP NEXT
The Norse return home to BB&T Arena for the next weekend's pair of Horizon League matchups, hosting Youngstown State and Cleveland State. The Penguins are first on the docket with a 7 p.m. tip-off on Thursday, Jan. 2. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
