@NKUNorseSB powers past NC Central in five innings, 9-0

ELON, N.C. – Northern Kentucky softball bounced back from a pair of losses on opening day with a five-inning shutout of NC Central, 9-0. The Norse move to 1-2 on the season while the Eagles drop to 1-5.
 
 
At the Plate
  • NKU had a tremendous outing at the plate with 14 hits, while NC Central was held to just three.
  • Nine different Norse recorded a hit in the contest, with four Norse recording multiple hits.
  • Zahrya McFarland was 3-for-4 to lead the team with two doubles and a triple. The senior scored three runs for the Norse and drove in a pair of runs.
  • Madi Mulder hwas 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Toree Stalter was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Kailey Rossiter rounded out the multi-hit performances, going 2-for-2 and scoring one run.
 
In the Circle
  • Taylor Ginther had her first complete-game shutout of the year and the second of her career. The junior hurler struck out three and did not walk any in 18 batters faced. Her last complete game shutout was on March 7, 2018, in a 2-0 victory over Loyola Chicago. She moves to 1-1 on the season.
 
Scoring Summary
  • NKU only needed its first two batters to get on the board, as McFarland led off the game with a triple to right center and was driven in by a sac fly from Stalter. The Norse plated one more as Kit Rocco scored on a fielding error.
  • In the second inning, McFarland doubled to right center to drive in Rossiter and Isabell Alexander. Stalter followed that up with a single to center field, and she and McFarland were sent home off a Mulder double to left center.
  • A leadoff single from Hailey Whitmer got the wheels rolling in the third inning as she was advanced by a bunt from Alexander and a drawn walk from Rossiter. She scored on another fielding error by the Eagles to give the Norse a 7-0 advantage.
  • The Norse added two more runs in the fifth as McFarland added a two-out double to left field before she was driven in by a double to right center from Stalter. Mulder followed it up with a single to right field to score Stalter.
  • The Eagles tallied one hit in the bottom of the frame, but were unable to advance any runners past first as the inning closed and the run rule was implemented.
 
 
Norse Notes
  • McFarland, Mulder and Rocco have recorded at least one hit in each of NKU's three games this year.
  • McFarland and Mulder have also had multi-hit games in the past two games.
  • The Norse recorded five doubles in the contest.
  • NKU faced NC Central for the first time in program history.
