@NKUNorseSB closes out tournament with setback to Virginia

ELON, N.C. – Northern Kentucky softball dropped its rematch with Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Virginia, 11-1, to close out the Elon February Softball Classic. The Norse end their first weekend at 1-3 while the Cavaliers moved on to 4-5.
 
 
At the Plate
  • Virginia held a 14-2 advantage in hits.
  • Josie Frazier had both hits for the Norse, going 2-for-3 from the plate.
  • Zahrya McFarland scored NKU's lone run after drawing one walk.
 
In the Circle
  • Taylor Ginther got the start in the circle and tossed 4.1 innings, striking out two batters and walking none.
  • Emily Koperdak absorbed the loss, pitching 2.2 innings with one strikeout and three batters walked.
 
Scoring Summary
  • Virginia took a 1-0 edge over the Norse with a leadoff home run, but the Norse were able to knot the score at 1-1 after McFarland drew a walk and was able to score later on a wild pitch.
  • A two-run home run in the third gave the Cavaliers the lead for good, and Virginia extended that further in the fifth with a two-RBI single immediately followed by another two-run homer.
  • The Cavaliers plated four more in the final frame to reach their final 11-1 count.
 
 
 
Norse Notes
  • NKU is now 0-2 all-time versus Virginia, with both meetings coming this weekend.
  • Over the course of the tournament, both McFarland and Madi Mulder batted above .400. McFarland scored five runs for the Norse and drove in two with a .429 batting average, while Mulder batted .462 and had four RBI.
 
Up Next
  • The Norse head back to North Carolina next weekend for the UNCG Invitational in Greensboro. NKU takes on Iona and Longwood on Friday, Feb. 22, before facing host UNC Greensboro on Saturday, Feb. 23. The second game on Saturday will then be a seeded contest with either the consolation or championship game on Sunday.
