Stalter’s grand slam highlights pair of victories for @NKUNorseSB

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Northern Kentucky softball concluded the UNCG Invitational with a doubleheader sweep of Iona. The Norse held off the Gaels in the first game, 3-2, before a 5-1 win in the second meeting. NKU moves to 3-5 on the season while Iona drops to 0-4.

In the Circle
  • Emily Koperdak started in the circle, tossing 3.0 innings with one strikeout and one batter walked.
  • Taylor Ginther pitched the final 4.0 innings in relief, picking up the win and moving to 2-2 on the season. She fanned a career-high six batters and did not walk any.
 
Scoring Summary
  • McDaniel was hit by a pitch to lead off the third inning, and she was advanced to second on a Stalter single to left field before being driven home off a McFarland double to right center. Mulder made it 2-0 in favor of the Norse with a sac fly to right field, scoring Stalter.
  • Iona plated a run in the bottom of the third off an RBI single.
  • The Gaels got two on base to lead off the fourth, prompting Ginther to take the circle for the Norse. She made quick work of the next three batters, striking out all three.
  • Iona used another RBI single to tie the contest up at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth.
  • NKU took the lead back in the top of the seventh, as Stalter singled through the left side with two outs and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Frazier drove her in off a double down the left side, giving NKU a 3-2 advantage.
  • The Norse surrendered a pair of hits in the bottom of the seventh, but ended the frame with a double play to secure the victory.
 
Game 2: NKU 5, Iona 1
 
At the Plate
  • NKU had the edge in the second game, 9-8.
  • Frazier, Mulder and Stalter all went 2-for-3 at the plate. Stalter had a double and a grand slam, driving in four runs for the Norse, while Mulder drove in the remaining run.
  • Five different Norse scored in the contest: Isabell Alexander, Frazier, Ava Lawson, McDaniel and Stalter.
 
In the Circle
  • Ginther got the start for NKU, pitching 3.0 innings with three hits and no walks allowed before returning for the final inning. She was awarded the win and moves to 3-2.
  • Hailey Whitmer went on for 1.0 inning in relief, allowing two hits while also not allowing a walk.
  • Koperdak pitched for the fifth and sixth innings, striking out one batter and walking one.
 
Scoring Summary
  • Stalter knocked a two-out grand slam out of the park in the bottom of the second inning, scoring herself, McDaniel, Alexander and Lawson. The Norse added one more run in the inning as Mulder drove Frazier in with a single to right center.
  • Iona plated its lone run of the contest in the top of the fifth, with a leadoff double paving the way for an RBI single.
 
Scoring Summary
  • Stalter's grand slam was just the second home run of her career, her first being in yesterday's game against Longwood.
  • It was the first grand slam for NKU since Taylor Brummell had one on May 5, 2018, versus Detroit Mercy.
  • NKU turned three double plays on the Gaels between the two contests.
  • The Norse are now 2-1 all-time against Iona.
 
Up Next
  • NKU travels to Nashville, Tennessee, for the Bruin Classic on Friday-Sunday, March 1-3. The Norse face host Belmont to open up the tournament on Friday at 2 p.m. CT/3 ET. They then take on regional foe Dayton and Alabama A&M on Saturay before facing Dayton and Belmont once more on Sunday.
