Big eighth inning lifts Cincinnati past @NKUNorseBSB

CINCINNATI – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team fell to Cincinnati on Wednesday evening by a final score of 14-6. UC broke a 6-6 tie with eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. NKU drops to 4-18 on the year, while UC improves to 9-14.
 
AT THE PLATE  
ON THE MOUND
  • Tyler Ollier made his first collegiate start. He went four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks. He also struck out a batter.
  • Tyler Murphy came out of the bullpen in the fifth inning. He threw an inning and a third, giving up three runs.
  • Gunnar Barnard (L, 0-1) pitched for the second-straight day. He allowed three runs, while striking out a hitter.
  • Chris Barber went on the mound in the eighth inning and was charged with four runs.
  • TJ Graves recorded the final out of the eighth inning.
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • Cincinnati took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Jace Mercer scored on a wild pitch, after hitting a single in the inning.
  • NKU took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Haueter led off the inning with a home run to left field. In the next at-bat, Wakeham hit a double to center field. Wakeham later scored in the inning on an RBI groundout by Brennan Gick.
  • UC tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the second. Mercer reached on an error in the frame, allowing Griffin Merritt to score.
  • Luty led off the top of the third inning with a home run to give NKU a 3-2 lead.
  • The Bearcats crossed the plate once in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. Wyatt Stapp hit an RBI single to score Jeremy Johnson.
  • UC went ahead 6-3 in the sixth inning. Mercer hit an RBI triple in the frame, and he scored on an RBI groundout by Joey Bellini. Stapp also came home in the inning on a sacrifice fly by AJ Bumpass.
  • NKU evened the game at 6-6 in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch by the UC pitcher allowed Fisher to cross the plate. Luty then hit a double to right field, which gave Gick the opportunity to score. A sacrifice fly by Sam Hedges in the next at-bat brought home Pilat.
  • UC loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the inning.
  • NKU had the bases loaded in the eighth, but UC escaped the jam without allowing a run.
  • UC went ahead 14-6 in the bottom of the eighth. The biggest plays in the frame came from Bumpass and Joey Wiemer. Bumpass hit a three-run homer, and Wiemer added a two-run double.
 
 
GAME NOTES
  • Hauter is on a 10-game hitting streak, and he recorded his second home run of the year.
  • Luty's homer was also his second of the season.
  • UC had a 13-8 advantage in hits, and each team committed an error.

  • NKU hosts Oakland this weekend for a Horizon League series. The series will begin on Friday, March 29.
