HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's basketball team dropped its home-opener, 49-63. NKU falls to 0-3 for the season, while the Falcons start their season 2-0 on the year.
STATS LEADERS
- Lindsey Duvall led the Norse in the rebounding column with 14 and put up 10 points, marking the first double-double in her career. Duvall had a 2-of-4 (50 percent) mark from the field and drained six from the charity stripe.
- Carissa Garcia matched Duvall with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting (56 percent) and chipped in three assists.
- Kailey Coffey secured eight rebounds, pitched in five points, an assist and a steal.
- Grayson Rose missed double digits in scoring by one point. She had nine points, five rebounds and a block for the afternoon.
TURNING POINT
- BGSU went on a 9-0 run late in the third, which gave the Falcons a 20-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- Coffey grabbed the first basket 50 seconds into the game with a post-up in the paint. After the basket, Coffey took one for the team on the defensive end by taking charge.
- With two back-door buckets by Niece and Garcia, the Norse were tied with the Falcons with 6:05 left to play in the first quarter.
- Rose and Duvall then pulled down two offensive rebounds. Duvall was sent to the line afterward, making two free-throws, putting the Norse down just one with two minutes left in the first.
- At the end of 10 minutes of action, the score was 13-9 in favor of the Falcons.
- The second quarter started off slow with both teams only scoring two points by the 6:11 mark before BGSU began pulling away.
- Rose secured her second offensive rebound of the half and dished the ball to Coffey. Coffey was fouled on her jumper and made both of her free throws, cutting the Falcons lead to nine with 1:47 left in the half.
- Going into the break, Bowling Green held the 34-20 advantage. Rose and Garcia both had a pair of offensive rebounds and the Norse had a total of seven offensive rebounds in the first half.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- Coffey started off the second half with a free throw followed by a steal. An ensuing fast break jumper came from Garcia with Souder assisting on the play.
- The Norse trimmed the Falcons lead late in the fourth quarter with a 13-0 run. It was not enough to overcome the existing deficit despite the team's effort.
- Rose filled up the scoring column in the second half by scoring seven of her total nine points.
- The Norse shot 50 percent in the second half from the field on 10-of-20 (50 percent) shooting.
- NKU made both of their baskets beyond the arc in the fourth quarter.
- The Norse had 19 points from the bench.
GAME NOTES
- Kailey Coffey passed Nancy Winstel for 12th all-time in career rebounds after snatching a total of eight rebounds, six being on the defensive glass, and two on the offensive.
- Duvall's 14 rebounds is a new career high. Her rebounding accomplishment along with her 10 points marks the first double-double in the program since February 27, 2019, when Rose went for 10 points and 11 rebounds against Detroit Mercy. Duvall went 6-of-7 (86 percent) from the charity strip, which brings her season average to 88 percent.
- Garcia averaged 7.3 points per game as a freshman and her 10-point performance against the Falcons launches her to 9.8 points per game in her sophomore stint.
