Turnovers loom large as @NKUNorseMBB drops 79-72 decision at Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Northern Kentucky suffered its first loss of the season with a 79-72 setback at Chattanooga, falling to 2-1 on the season. The Mocs improved to 3-0.
STATS LEADERS TURNING POINT
  • Chattanooga used a 13-0 run midway through the second half to take a two-point advantage and extend to a comfortable 15-point margin. The Norse got within eight with 3:18 remaining, but the Mocs answered with the next four points to regain control.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • Northern Kentucky ended the first half on a 9-2 run to take a 31-30 advantage into intermission.
  • Chattanooga led by as many as seven in the half, building a 21-14 advantage with 8:10 remaining.
  • Faulkner led the way with nine points, while both Warrick and Nelson chipped in with six. 
  • Nelson also had five boards to help NKU to a slim 17-15 advantage in rebounds.
  • The Norse shot a blistering 58 percent (14-of-24), but committed 12 turnovers, leading to 14 points for the Mocs.
  • NKU's defense limited Chattanooga to 45 percent shooting (14-of-31) and forced them into nine miscues, which the Norse turned into eight points.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • Chattanooga took a slim 46-44 advantage and ran out on a 13-0 run to grab a 15-point lead with 8:58 remaining.
  • The Norse got the deficit down to eight coming out of the under-four media timeout, but the Mocs answered with the next four points.
  • Turnovers continued to play a factor, as NKU coughed up the ball nine times and Chattanooga turned them into a 15-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
  • NKU was outscored 49-41 in the half after allowing Chattanooga to shoot 58 percent (18-of-31) during the stanza. NKU made 44 percent (15-of-34) during the frame.
GAME NOTES
  • Nelson's double-double is his third in a row to start the season. The last time a Norse had three-straight double-doubles came in Dec. 2018 when Drew McDonald registered four-straight against Miami (21 points, 10 rebounds), Northern Illinois (15 points, rebounds), IUPUI (24 points, 12 rebounds) and UIC (19 points, 20 rebounds).
  • NKU's 21 turnovers were more than it had in the first two games of this season combined (17).
  • Chattanooga held a stout 29-13 advantage in points off turnovers.
  • Northern Kentucky won the battle of the boards, 37-32, but lost for the first time in the last two years when it wins the rebound battle.
  • Eleven Norse saw action in the game, with 10 of them finding the scoring column.
  • NKU shot a season-best 50 percent (29-of-58) from the floor.
  • Darius Harding scored his first bucket as a Norse, burying a three in the first half.
  • Noah Hupmann also saw the first action in his NKU career, scoring a layup as well.
