Stifling defense leads @NKUNorseMBB to 65-56 win over Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The Northern Kentucky men's basketball team finished out its Wisconsin road trip with a 65-56 win over Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon at Panther Arena. NKU is now 16-7 on the year and claims an 8-3 Horizon League record with the win. Milwaukee moves to 11-12 on the season and 5-6 in conference play.

STATS LEADERS

  • Tyler Sharpe led the Norse with 18 points on the afternoon on 6-of-13 (46 percent) shooting. The Norse senior was efficient from beyond the arc, going 4-of-8 (50 percent)
  • Jalen Tate was a jack of all trades in the game, bringing in 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists. He was 5-of-12 (42 percent) from the floor.
  • Bryson Langdon had another double-figure scoring-performance, contributing 10 points. Trevon Faulkner also joined him with 10 points.
  • Silas Adheke had eight rebounds in the contest.

TURNING POINT

  • Holding a 28-25 lead with 15:26 left in the game, NKU went on a quick 8-0 run over the course of a minute, building a lead that was never in jeopardy for the remainder of the game.

FIRST HALF SUMMARY

  • Tate and Adheke put up a combined eight-unanswered points before the first media timeout. Both Norse contributed four points to start, which included a dunk by each.
  • NKU kept inching away as the half went on. Along with stifling defense that held Milwaukee to just two points in the first seven minutes, Walton and Langdon each hit shots extend the lead to 12-2.
  • After a three-pointer by Walton with 8:49 to go in the half, Milwaukee sank three-straight shots to bring the game within one at 16-15.
  • Sharpe sank three-straight buckets for the Norse to help NKU to a 9-0 run as the half drew to a close. The Norse senior started off with a jumper from the paint before bringing in a triple and a layup on following possessions.
  • The defense-heavy half closed with NKU leading 25-17. Milwaukee was out-rebounded 27-19 over the course of the half and shot just 7-of-30 (23 percent) from the floor.

SECOND HALF SUMMARY

  • Milwaukee began the new half strong and cut its deficit to NKU to just three points by the 15:26 mark. Faulkner was the only NKU score at that point with a three-pointer off an assist by Tate.
  • It took just over a minute for the Norse to rebuild their lead to an 11-point advantage. Tate began the quick run with a contested layup down low, while Sharpe and Langdon fired off from deep for three apiece.
  • Tate and Sharpe continued on their tear out of a Milwaukee timeout. Tate had a layup and reached the line on two occasions for four free-throws, while Sharpe drained another triple to give the Norse a 45-30 lead with 12:21 to go.
  • NKU had no problem getting to the line once they had a cushion to play with. Langdon and Sharpe shot free throws with around seven minutes left after being aggressive in the fast break. Langdon then reached the line again with 5:22 to go to further the Norse advantage to 19 points.
  • The Panthers were slowly chipping away at NKU's lead as the game closed, but Faulkner unloaded a three-pointer with 2:18 left to give NKU a 62-49 lead. The sophomore then reached the line a couple of possessions later and hit a free throw to keep the game out of reach.

GAME NOTES

  • Milwaukee's 17 points in the first half is the lowest-scoring half by any NKU opponent this season. NKU's best defensive-half coming into today was a 21 point defensive effort in the first half of its 75-49 win over Cleveland State on January 18.
  • The Norse remain undefeated at 13-0 when they hold a team to 64 points or less. This is the eighth time this season a Norse opponent was held under 60 points.
  • NKU also remains undefeated when they outrebound its opponent. The Norse won the rebounding battle today, 40-31.
  • Langdon has scored in double figures in six of the last eight contests, averaging 12.6 in that span.
