@NKUNorseSB defeats Mount Saint Mary’s, falls to Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Northern Kentucky softball split the second day of the GWU Softball Tournament, posting a 4-3 victory over Mount Saint Mary's before dropping a 7-2 decision to Gardner-Webb. The Norse move to 4-4 on the season.

  • Caitlin Karo picked up her first victory with the Norse, pitching the complete game. The junior fanned four batters and did not walk any in 7.0 innings of work.
 
Scoring Summary
  • NKU took a two-run lead in the bottom of the second. Taylor Hoover led off with a double, with Alexander going in as a pinch runner. Whitmer then reached base with a single. Alexander was able to score off an RBI groundout from McDaniel and Whitmer was sent home thanks to a Frazier single.
  • The Mountaineers equalized the score in the third thanks to a two-out two-RBI double. They then took the lead in the fifth, scoring on a sac fly.
  • A fielding error by Mount Saint Mary's center fielder allowed NKU to tie the contest up at 3-3, with Frazier reaching home. Whitmer followed up with a single to load the bases, and Rossiter was able to score the winning run on the next play.

  • Gardner-Webb posted an 8-6 advantage at the plate.
  • Whitmer had another multi-hit performance, as did Rossiter, as the duo each went 2-for-3.
  • Frazier extended her hitting streak to eight games.
 
 
In the Circle
  • Taylor Ginther started for the Norse, pitching 5.0 innings in the setback. She moves to 2-2 on the season with the loss.
  • Lauryn Hicks pitched the final inning for the Norse, striking out three while allowing just one hit.
 
Scoring Summary
  • Northern Kentucky got on the board first, as a Whitmer single and two walks loaded the bases for the Norse. Tatum Biddle drew a third walk, allowing pinch runner Alexander to score.
  • Gardner-Webb tied it up in the fourth with a leadoff home run. The Runnin' Bulldogs then tacked on six runs in the fifth, five of which were unearned.
  • NKU added one more run in the sixth thanks to a solo homer from Whitmer.
