@NKUNorseMBB take down the Titans, 84-65, on Homecoming night

DETROIT – The Northern Kentucky men's basketball team beat Detroit Mercy, 84-65, in front of an electric crowd on Homecoming weekend at BB&T Arena. The Norse move to 18-7 on the season and 10-3 in the Horizon League with the win, while Detroit Mercy falls to 6-19 on the year and 4-8 in Horizon League play.
 
STATS LEADERS
  • Jalen Tate led NKU with 24 points on 9-for-13 (69.2 percent) shooting, which included a perfect 1-of-1 mark from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from the free throw line. Tate also had six rebounds and six assists on the night.
  • Tyler Sharpe contributed 17 points for the Norse, involving a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Sharpe also had four steals.
  • Trevon Faulkner had 16 points on the night on 6-of-15 (40 percent) shooting. He also added six boards to the stat sheet.
  •  Adrian Nelson had 13 rebounds and four steals to go along with his six points.
 
TURNING POINT
Less than two minutes into the second half, the Norse began a 22-6 run, giving them a 63-45 lead, which the Titans could not dig themselves out of.
 
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • Dantez Walton sank a three from the top of the key off of an offensive rebound to begin the game. Detroit Mercy answered with a basket of their own, but Jalen Tate and Trevon Faulkner also scored early in the half to keep the lead for the Norse.
  • Electricity was felt throughout BB&T arena as Tate answered a Titan's three six minutes into the match with one of his own to put the Norse up 10-7. Sharpe then stole the ball back for NKU and Nelson scored a heavily contested lay-up after two offensive rebounds.
  • Bryant Mocaby proved to be a difference maker when he entered the game, sinking two threes less than two minutes apart.
  • Tate showed up late in the half with three-consecutive buckets for the Norse. It began when he snagged an offensive board at the 7:50 mark and put it back. The next play, Tate captured the defensive board and drove the entire court, juking out defenders all the way to the rim, to give the Norse a 24-19 advantage.
  • Although the Norse never lost the lead, the Titans battled to keep it close, with the largest lead being nine points with 2:40 left in the half.
  • Tate closed out the half with 13 points, shooting 100 percent from the floor up until the last seconds of the half.
  • NKU ended the half with a last-second put back jumper from Faulkner giving the Norse a 41-35 edge over the Titans. Detroit Mercy was held to 12-of-26 (46.2 percent shooting) and a 4-for-11 mark (36.4 percent) from beyond the arc.
 
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • Detroit Mercy scored two baskets to open up the second half, decreasing its deficit to just two. The Norse fired back, going on the 22-6 run to gain an 18-point lead, 63-45.
  • After a stretch of free throws, Faulkner drained two jumpers followed by a Sharpe three to stretch the lead to 78-57.
  • The Norse shot 23 free throws in the half, a stark increase from just six in the first half of play.
  • NKU's defense showed up strong in the second half, forcing nine turnovers and allowing just 21 shots.
  • With the game all but wrapped up, David Wassler spun his defender and laid it off the back board to close out scoring for the Norse.
GAME NOTES
  • With his 24 points, Tate reached a new season high and surpassed Chad Jackson at number 44 for all-time scoring at NKU with 816 points.
  • NKU continued its undefeated streak (12-0) when outrebounding its opponent. The Norse grabbed 39 rebounds compared to just 29 from the Titans.
  • The Norse stout defense held Antoine Davis to a season low of 10 points. Davis entered the night the league in scoring, averaging 23 points per game.
  • Nelson had a new career high in steals with four on the night. His defensive effort in total steals was matched by Sharpe, who notched his season high.
  • Northern Kentucky pushed the tempo, outscoring Detroit Mercy 14-2 in fast-break points.
  • The Norse finished the game with 15 assists, compared to just 11 miscues. Meanwhile, Northern Kentucky forced 19 Detroit Mercy turnovers and limited it to just nine assists.
  • A season-high 6,231 fans, which included nearly 1,200 students, were in attendance at BB&T Arena.
