@NKUNorseWBB rallies for road win at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Northern Kentucky women's basketball won the fifth of its last six games after taking down Youngstown State on the road, 59-55. The Norse improve to 14-10 overall and 8-5 in Horizon League play while the Penguins drop to 11-13 (4-9 Horizon).

STATS LEADERS
  • Molly Glick led the Norse with 14 points, while Ivy Turner also reached double figures with 11 points to go with five rebounds.
  • Carissa Garcia added nine points, and both Kailey Coffey and Emmy Souder chipped in seven. Coffey also led the Norse with nine rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.
 
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • NKU got on the board early, scoring on the first possession courtesy of a triple from Turner. A layup from Coffey and another 3-pointer from Glick gave the Norse an 8-2 advantage less than two minutes into the game.
  • Youngstown State found its footing following a timeout, outscoring the Norse 22-8 in the next eight minutes on a hot 9-for-12 from the field.
  • The Norse chipped away at the Penguins' lead and trailed by just one possession at the half, 35-33.
 
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • Glick put the Norse up by a point as she was fouled on a made layup and also sank the ensuing free throw. The Norse maintained the lead until the 3:40 mark in the third quarter, when YSU tied it up at 41 all.
  • A jumper from Garcia gave NKU a one-point lead heading into the final period, 47-46.
  • The fourth quarter featured two ties and two lead changes, with NKU's largest lead being a 53-48 advantage following back-to-back baskets from Turner. The Penguins tied the game up at 55-55 with 1:59 to play, but were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest as Glick scored the winning basket while Souder and Ally Niece secured the victory with insurance points from the charity stripe.
 
GAME NOTES
  • The Norse shot 41.1 percent from the field while the Penguins connected at 44.7 percent.
  • After the Penguins outrebounded NKU in the first half, 14-11, the Norse answered back with a strong second-half effort on the boards and finished the game with a 31-25 rebounding advantage.
  • NKU had an impactful effort on the offensive boards, scoring 13 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds.
  • The Norse have kept seven league opponents to 60 points or fewer and are undefeated when keeping teams under that mark.
 
UP NEXT
The Norse return to BB&T Arena for the final two home games of the regular season. NKU hosts UIC in the first game on Thursday, Feb. 13, with tip-off against the Flames set for 7 p.m.
