@NKUNorseMBB drops 65-63 decision at home against IUPUI

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky men's basketball team fell to the Jaguars of IUPUI on Saturday night, 65-63. The Norse move to 5-8 on the season (3-5 Horizon League) while IUPUI improves to 3-4 on the year (2-4 Horizon League).

STATS LEADERS
  • Trevon Faulkner posted 16 points, including a perfect clip from the line on 8-of-8 (100 percent) shooting. He added six rebounds and three steals.
  • Adrian Nelson finished with 13 rebounds, 11 of them coming on the defensive end. Nelson contributed seven points of his own.
  • David Böhm joined Faulkner in the double-digit scoring column with 12 points, shooting 5-of-8 (63 percent) from the field.
  • NKU finished with five players tallying an assist. Jake Evans led all players with three.

TURNING POINT
  • The Norse found themselves struggling on offense late in the second half, with a scoring drought that lasted from the 4:18 mark until seven seconds remained in the competition.

FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • The Norse won the opening tip and Faulkner wasted no time putting points on the board for the home team with a heavily-contested layup.
  • At the midpoint of the half, both offenses were struggling to find a rhythm on offense, with the score being 12-9 in favor of the Norse. Neither team scored over a 3:31drought.
  • Evans drained a three-pointer with 6:08 on the clock to stop a 10-4 run by IUPUI, placing the Norse in a one-point deficit (19-20).
  • With just over a minute left in the half, Nelson threw down a monster put-back slam to stop a 6-0 IUPUI run and give him his sixth board on the night.
  • The Norse had eight players on the score sheet at the break, but still found themselves trailing, 26-32.
  • The Norse and Jaguars shot at a similar clip from the floor for the half, shooting 43 percent (12-of-28) and 42 percent (12-of-29), respectively.

SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • Once again, the Norse were quick to open the scoring for the half, putting points up on a wide open jumper from Bryson Langdon.
  • With 14:12 left in the game, the Norse knocked down three free throws to regain the lead, 41-40, and close out a 7-0 run against the Jaguars.
  • Bohm's and-one with 4:18 left to play would be the final lead NKU held over IUPUI on the night at a 61-60 advantage. The Norse would not score again until seven seconds remained on the game clock.
  • Despite shooting 55 percent (11-of-20) from the floor, the Norse were unable to overcome the five three-point field goals the Jaguars rained in on the half.

GAME NOTES
  • Faulkner added to his impressive season by scoring in double figures again, making it 13 total games.
  • This is the third game throughout the season where scoring has been decided by one possession. NKU won by 1-point against Ball State on November 25. They lost at Cleveland State in OT on January 9.
  • Nelson tallied his eighth game this season where he reached double-digit rebounds.
  • IUPUI converted 11 threes on the evening. The only other time NKU has allowed a team to drop more than 10 three-pointers against them was Kent State on December 13, 2020.
  • NKU won the battle of the boards, 31-29, marking the seventh time it has done so this season.
  • The Norse outscored the Jaguars, 30-20, in the paint
