@NKUNorseWBB ends Milwaukee’s undefeated conference-streak, wins 67-50 on the road

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – Northern Kentucky Women's Basketball is now the lone team undefeated in Horizon League play. The Norse bested the Panthers, 67-50, on Friday night to move to 5-5 on the year and 5-0 in Horizon League action, while Milwaukee slips to 15-2 and 12-1 in league play.

STATS LEADERS
  • Carissa Garcia led the Norse with 20 points on the night, shooting 8-for-14 (57 percent) from the field and rained from beyond the arc with a 4-for-9 (44 percent) clip. She also added six rebounds and three assists to the Norse cause.

TURNING POINT
  • With the Norse lead trimmed to just three points with 7:18 to go, Turner hit a three to kick off a 17-2 NKU run.

FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • A nearly one-month break from play appeared to be no problem for the Norse, as NKU surged to a 13-0 run after an opening bucket by Milwaukee. Duvall led the burst of scoring with six points, two of which came off of a fast-break feed from Garcia.
  • Milwaukee made adjustments and cooled the Norse run with buckets at the 3:06 and 1:25 marks, respectively.
  • NKU led after the first ten-minutes, 13-6. Milwaukee shot for just 17.6 percent (3-for-17) in the first quarter.
  • To open the second, Turner and Garcia matched a pair of made-shots by the Panthers to keep the Norse lead at 18-11.
  • Milwaukee nailed a three and added an extra pair at the line, but NKU fired right back with layups by Turner, Rose and Garcia before a media timeout with 4:58 left in the half.
  • The Norse reached their largest lead of the half at 16 with a fast-break triple from Garcia with 1:24 to go.
  • NKU went into the break with a 32-18 lead over Milwaukee. The Norse shot 13-for-30 (43 percent) and led the rebounding margin 21-18. They also held the Panthers to zero three-pointers in 10 attempts.

SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • To start the half, Duvall sank five-unanswered points in response to Milwaukee baskets on back-to-back possessions. Another layup for the Panthers followed, but Turner kept them in check with a mid-ranger with 6:53 left in the third.
  • A Norse drought lasting four and a half minutes allowed a 6-0 rally by the Panthers to get back within single-digits. Garcia stopped the bleeding with layups on two-straight NKU possessions, giving the Norse a 44-33 edge with 1:22 to go on the third.
  • Four points from the Panthers and an Igo three rounded out the third with the Norse in front, 47-37.
  • In two minutes of action to start the fourth quarter, Milwaukee hit three-straight shots to evaporate the Norse lead to three by the eight-minute mark.
  • After empty possessions from both sides, Turner and Rose a crucial pair of three-pointers to reextend the Norse advantage to nine with 6:46 left.
  • A layup for Milwaukee went in to cut the Norse lead to seven, but Garcia sparked an 11-0 run for the Norse with 6:03 left to put the game out of reach. Duvall iced the game with six of the final eight NKU points on the night.

GAME NOTES
  • NKU's 5-0 start to league action is its best start in conference play since the 2008-09 season. The Norse secured eight-straight victories to start GLVC play that year.

  • Milwaukee's 50 points is a new season-low. NKU is now 3-0 when holding opponents to 50 points or less.

  • Tonight's game is the second time this season that Norse held its opponent to just three three-pointers. Robert Morris was also held to just a trio of threes on December 12.
