Exciting five-setter sees @NKUNorseVB fall to Wright State

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky fell in five sets to Horizon League-rival Wright State (25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-12) on Friday night. The Norse see their record dip to 12-7 overall and the Raiders improve to 16-6. Both teams are now tied in the Horizon League standings at 8-2.

STATS LEADERS
  • On a night where she was honored in a pre-match ceremony for her 2,000th-career assist, Miranda Wucherer delivered her third triple-double of the season and ninth of her career with 11 kills, 26 assists and 12 digs. She added three block assists for good measure.
  • For the 11th time this season, Anna Brinkmann recorded a double-double, notching 18  kills and career-high 27 digs.
  • Katy Yopko got in on the double-double parade with 24 assists and 10 scoops.
  • Abby Kanakry contributed eight kills and team-best six blocks, while Joy Banks chipped in with seven kills and five blocks, three of which were solo.
  • Reilly Briggs also registered double-figure kills with 13 and added four blocks to the team total.
 
FIRST SET SUMMARY   
  • Wright State jumped out to a quick 11-6 lead and sustained it to 13-8, forcing Northern Kentucky to use both of its timeouts.
  • The Norse managed to hang around and eventually cut the deficit to three, 23-20, resulting in the Raiders' first timeout.
  • WSU closed out the stanza, 25-20, with the next two points.
  • NKU registered 10 kills and just four errors, but WSU put away 18 attacks and committed only five miscues.
  • At the net, the Norse had a 3-2 advantage in blocks. They also recorded the only ace in the stanza.
 
SECOND SET SUMMARY   
  • Three-straight points were scored by the Raiders to open the frame, but the Norse fought back to take a 7-6 advantage.
  • After the teams battled back-and-forth trading ties and lead changes, WSU pushed ahead 14-12.
  • Following NKU's timeout, it battled back to even the score at 15 and eventually took the lead at 20-19 thanks to consecutive solo blocks by Kanakry and Banks.
  • Wright State tied the set at 23, but back-to-back terminations from Briggs secured the set, 25-23.
  • Northern Kentucky's offense was blistering with 15 kills and no hitting errors en route to a .536 attack percent.
  • Wright State finished with more terminations, 17, but committed seven total hitting errors, four of which were courtesy of NKU's block.
  • Briggs had eight kills and Brinkmann added three.
 
THIRD SET SUMMARY 
  • Brinkmann opened with a block and two kills as NKU jumped out 4-2, only to see WSU rally to even the score.
  • Following a Norse run to pull ahead 8-5, the Raiders answered with a spurt of their own to take an 11-10 lead.
  • NKU tied it up only to see WSU respond and hold a 15-13 advantage at the media break.
  • A service errors from Wright State and block from Banks and Kanakry tied the score, but once again the Raiders countered with two points of their own leading to a timeout by Northern Kentucky.
  • Terminations from Banks and Kanakry plus a pair of hitting errors from Wright State comprised four-unanswered Northern Kentucky points to take a 19-17 lead. However, WSU countered with three-straight tallies of their own.
  • With WSU leading 21-20, NKU reeled off a 5-2 run keyed by Allie Siefke to win the set, 25-23. Siefke had two kills and two block assists to spark the Norse.
  • Northern Kentucky continued its torrid hitting clip at .314 courtesy of 18 kills and just two errors. Meanwhile, Wright State terminated 17 attacks but had seven errors due in part to four Norse blocks.
  • Brinkmann had six kills and 10 digs in the frame. Wucherer (4), Banks (3), Kanakry (3) and Siefki (2) also posted multiple terminations.
 
FOURTH SET SUMMARY 
  • Six of the first nine points went to the Raiders, resulting in an early Norse timeout.
  • Wright State eventually pulled ahead 16-9 and went on to a 25-18 decision.
  • Northern Kentucky had its worst attacking set of the match, tallying eight kills with six errors.
  • The Norse remained strong the net with four more blocks and forcing nine miscues from the Raiders, but WSU terminated 16 attacks in the stanza.
 
FIFTH SET SUMMARY 
  • NKU grabbed a 4-2 lead only to see WSU go on a 6-0 run.
  • The Norse battled back to within one, 11-10, forcing the Raiders to call timeout.
  • The teams traded the next four points before Wright State claimed the final two and a 15-13 decision.
 
MATCH NOTES   
  • Northern Kentucky, which entered the match as the league-leader in blocks, added 15 more stuffs to the season total to help the Norse record 11 fewer hitting miscues (28-17).
  • Although NKU posted a better attacking percentage, .246-.241, WSU had a 76-62 advantage in terminations.
  • The last time three Norse posted double-doubles also happened to come against the Raiders when the two teams met earlier this season on Sept. 25. Brinkmann (13 kills, 10 digs), Wucherer and Yopko (30 assists, 11 digs) were the three Norse to do so in that match as well with Wucherer (11 kills, 26 assists, 15 digs) also delivering one of her triple doubles.
 
NEXT UP 
The Norse remain in Highland Heights for the team's final three home games of the regular-season, beginning with Milwaukee on Thursday, Oct. 28. NKU then hosts Green Bay on Friday, Oct. 29, and UIC on Sunday, Oct. 31. Matches on Thursday and Friday begin at 6 p.m., while Sunday's contest starts at 2 p.m.
