Hard fought semifinal sees Oakland top @NKUNorseWSOC

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The No. 3-seeded Northern Kentucky women's soccer team was defeated by the No. 2-seeded Oakland Golden Grizzlies 3-1 in the Horizon League semifinals.

"Congratulations to Oakland, which is deservedly moving onto the final. Our team faced so much adversity this season and to advance to the conference semifinals is absolutely outstanding. We have a very hard-working, resilient, and coachable group. I am very proud of our student-athletes for the way that they trained and competed all season."
 
Scoring Summary
·     Oakland was on the board early in this match as Maggie Rimer scored off a corner kick from Sami Lopez in the 15'.
·     The Golden Grizzlies took advantage of an opportunity in the box in the 34' as Lopez recorded another assist, chipping the ball into Sharon Sampson who finished the score. 
·     NKU cut the Oakland lead in half in the 55' with a goal from Lydia Self on the assist from Morgan Jewell.
·     Oakland answered quickly with an insurance goal in the 59' as Ashley Postma found the back of the net. 

Between the Posts
·      Mimi Stines (9-8-2) played the full 90 minutes in goal for NKU, making six total saves and faced 14 total shots.
·      Noëmi Stadelmann (10-8-1) picked up the win for Oakland in goal, as she totaled four saves, and faced eight overall shots.  

Match Summary
·      The Golden Grizzlies posted the first shot of the match in the 6' as Jayna Fraser's attempt was saved by Stines. 
·      Oakland continued to pressure the NKU goal with additional shots in the 7' and 8'. 
·      Oakland scored the go-ahead goal in the 15' with a strike from Rimer off a corner kick assist from Lopez. 
·      The Norse posted their first shot of the contest in the 15' with Annie Greene aiming low, however her shot was saved by Stadelmann.
·      Stines continued to be tested in goal with another Oakland shot in the 31' that the Norse goalkeeper was able to scoop up.
·      The Golden Grizzlies extended their lead with a goal in the 34' with Sampson netting the score as Lopez tallied another assist. 
·      Kayla Wypasek looked to get NKU on the board with an attempt in the 37' but the header sailed high over the net. 
·      Wypasek recorded another shot for the Norse in the 44', this time off a free kick that saw the shot missing just high of the goal.
·      NKU cut into the Oakland lead with an early second half goal in the 55' as Self found the back of the net with the assist from Jewell.
·      Oakland quickly answered back with a goal of their own in the 59' by Postma.
·      Megan Sullivan saw a great attempt on goal in the 69' but Stadelmann was there to make the save. 
·      Lindsey Meyer kept the NKU offensive in high gear with multiple shots in both the 66' and 71'.
·      The Norse were issued two yellow cards in the half; first Meyer was booked in the 82' and then Emma McSwigan in the 84'. 

Norse Notes
·      Oakland out-shot the Norse 14-8 on the night. The Golden Grizzlies recorded 10 shots on goal as well, compared to NKU's five.
·      This was a physical contest between these two programs, as they combined for 23 overall fouls. 
·      Self, the 2021 Horizon League Freshman of the Year, netted her fourth goal of the year, capping off an incredible season.
·      Jewell tallied her second assist of the season.
