INDIANAPOLIS – A four-set win (25-17, 24-26, 25-14, 25-11) over IUPUI provided Northern Kentucky with its fourth-straight victory and 11
th in the last 12 matches. The Norse are now 16-7 overall and 12-2 in the Horizon League, while the Jaguars slide to 5-22 on the season and 3-13 against league foes.
STATS LEADERS
- Abby Kanakry went off for 13 kills behind a .500 attacking percentage. She had just one error in the match.
- The back row of Anna Burke and Lillian Leiner were sensational, racking up 18 and 15 digs, respectively.
- Anna Brinkmann helped both offensively and defensively with her 13th double-double of the season. She had 10 kills and 13 scoops, while also contributing five blocks.
- The Norse welcomed a third player with double-digit kills as Reilly Briggs contributed 12 on the strength of a .321 attacking clip.
- Sequoia Hunt matched her season's best in kills, which was originally established versus Missouri, with eight.
- Katy Yopko distributed 27 assists and six digs, while Miranda Wucherer added 20 assists and seven scoops.
FIRST SET SUMMARY
- A kill from Briggs ignited a 9-2 run to start the match for Northern Kentucky and the rout was on as the Norse won the set, 25-17.
- Brinkmann followed Briggs with consecutive aces. Joy Banks added a pair of terminations sandwiched around a Hunt and Briggs block during the opening spurt.
- Seven Norse registered a kill in the set, led by Briggs who was a perfect 4-for-4 on her attacks, as NKU hit a blistering .519. NKU tallied 16 kills with just two errors.
- Defensively, Burke set the tone along the back row with seven digs and the net defense stuffed two attacks.
SECOND SET SUMMARY
- Nine of the first 12 points went to the Norse, who sprinted out to a commanding lead for the second-straight set.
- However, IUPUI responded with two stretches where it scored 3-straight and then eight-straight points to pull ahead, 17-14.
- The arm of Kanakry and blocking duo of Siefke and Brinkmann got the Norse back in the stanza. Back-to-back terminations from Kanakry were followed by back-to-back blocks from Seifke and Brinkmann. Kanakry then put another attack away.
- However, Briana Brown used consecutive terminations to end the frame, 26-24, in favor of IUPUI.
- NKU posted another 15 kills, but allowed IUPUI to terminate 17.
- The Jaguars may have also had more attack errors, 6-4, but they also aced the Norse to the tune of a 3-1 advantage.
THIRD SET SUMMARY
- The third was a tail of two sides as NKU opened with three kills and no errors, while IUPUI began with no kills and six attack errors, and the Norse rang up a 10-3 lead.
- Northern Kentucky led 15-5 before IUPUI registered its first kill, which came after the Jaguars had recorded seven miscues.
- NKU won the stanza, 25-14, after holding IUPUI to just five terminations with 10 errors and an attacking percentage of negative-.192.
- The Norse put away 12 attacks at a .333 clip.
- Blocking was a key reason the Jaguars struggled. The Norse stuffed five IUPUI swings.
- Kanakry led the way with four kills.
FOURTH SET SUMMARY
- NKU began the fourth with seven kills and no errors en route to a 12-5 advantage.
- The onslaught continued and Northern Kentucky ran away with a 25-11 win.
- Brinkmann had four kills to lead the way, but the trio of Briggs, Kanakry and Hunt each contributed three terminations as well.
- The Norse defense shined once again, allowing just three kills from the Jaguars and forcing them into a sub-zero attacking percentage for the second-straight set at negative-.111.
MATCH NOTES
- Northern Kentucky rang up a 58-36 advantage in kills due in part to a large discrepancy in attacking with NKU terminating at a .358 clip and IUPUI hitting a mere .076.
- NKU continued to dominate net play with 11 blocks, but also posted a 65-43 edge in digs.
- Kanakry's 13 kills are a season-high and mark the third time in the last four matches she has hit double-figures in terminations.
- For the fifth-consecutive match, Briggs has also hit the double-digit plateau. In fact, she has registered double-figure terminations 10 times against league opposition.
- Brinkmann now sits at 990 digs for her career.
