HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky men's basketball team (1-0) put on a high-flying show with five dunks and let it fly from 3-point range with 15 made threes as it defeated Wheeling in its home opening matchup at BB&T arena, 82-54.
STATS LEADERS
- Hubertas Pivorius led the Norse in the scoring column with 19 points and went 5-of-10 from behind-the-arc (50 percent).
- Adrian Nelson and Chris Brandon tied for a total of 9 rebounds each. Brandon went 2-for-2 in free throws.
- Trevon Faulkner scored 17 points for the Norse, shooting 6-for-11 (54.5 percent) from the field. Faulkner also pitched in 2 assists and 2 defensive rebounds.
- Trey Robinson contributed 13 points and had a total of four rebounds, going two for two in both offensive and defensive.
- The Norse had a fourth double-figure scorer in Bryson Langdon, who added 11 points and four assists without a turnover.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- Nearly four minutes in, Faulkner opened up the game with back-to-back three pointers, giving the Norse their first lead of the night, 6-5.
- Langdon had a nice drive to the net, securing a layup at the 12:26 minute mark.
- With 10:26 minute remaining, Faulkner delivered the first alley-oop of the season with an assist from Warrick.
- Warrick had another assist leading to Robinson making a splash from behind-the-arc. The Norse regained the lead, 15-14.
- Pivorius landed his first three-pointer of the night, with an assist from Sam Vinson. Thiry-two seconds later, Böhm mounted up an assist to Pivorius, who swished yet another three-pointer.
- The Norse then went on an 8-0 scoring run, catalyzed by Pivorius burying a three. The run was maintained by a crucial slam dunk from Robinson, 34-14.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- Only thirty seconds into the half, Adrian Nelson produces a layup, with an assist from Böhm. Norse with a 15-point advantage over Wheeling, 41-26.
- Warrick sank his first three of the season at the 16:06 minute mark. He was assisted by Faulkner, helping the Norse start the half off well with a 6-0 scoring run.
- Faulkner assisted Langdon with a 3-point field goal at the 14:19 mark. 61 seconds later, Faulkner came in hot from behind-the-arc to put NKU ahead 53-30.
- Langdon came through with a steal, driving it through the paint with a pass to Vinson. Vinson sent the ball back to Langdon, helping Langdon secure a clean lay-in.
- Brandon threw down a highlight-reel dunk at the 11:43 minute mark, donating to the Norse's continual lead and extending it to 62-37.
GAME NOTES
- Northern Kentucky made 50 percent of its shots on the evening, going 31-of-62 from the floor.
- NKU was also impressive from 3-point territory, connecting on 15-of-38 (39.5 percent).
- The high-flying quartet of Robinson, Faulkner, Brandon and Nelson threw down five total dunks on the night, including two from Robinson.
- The Norse contributed 12 points from turnovers and 28 points from the paint.
- Northern Kentucky's bench was sensational on the night totaling 48 points.
