@NKUNorseMBB closes out Green Bay in final moments, 71-66

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Trailing by a mere point with 1:35 remaining, Northern Kentucky closed on a 6-0 run to earn a 71-66 win at Green Bay on Saturday evening. The victory runs NKU's record to 12-9 in all games and 10-6 in Horizon League action. GB slips to 7-15 overall and 7-11 against league opposition.

STAT LEADERS
  • Trevon Faulkner led the way with 21 points for the Norse, converting at an efficient 9-of-17 clip.
  • Marques Warrick made 9-of-16 field-goal attempts en route to 19 points. He also added three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
  • David Böhm contributed eight points and set a new personal best in the rebounding column with seven boards.
TURNING POINT
  • Trailing 66-65, Warrick got into the paint and hit a running floater with 1:13 on the clock to push the Norse back in front for the last lead change of the night.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • Adrian Nelson scored the first basket of the game, but the Norse used a steady dose of Faulkner and Warrick in the first half as the guards respectively poured in 14 and 10 points in the stanza.
  • NKU pushed ahead 9-4 early, but GB countered with a 9-2 run of its own to nab a 13-11 lead.
  • From there, it was a back-and-forth affair for the next three minutes. The Norse then used six-straight points to pull ahead 24-19.
  • Green Bay answered with eight of the next nine points. However, Northern Kentucky closed the half on a 9-2 spurt to go into intermission in front 34-28.
  • Shooting favored the Norse, as they buried 52 percent (15-of-29) of their shots compared to 41 percent (12-of-29) from the Phoenix.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • The Phoenix came out swinging in the second half and scored the first five points to cut the Norse advantage to a point, 34-33.
  • The next 3:41 of the game was all NKU as it went on a 12-4 run that was capped by a Böhm tip-dunk and led to a GB timeout with just under 15 minutes remaining.
  • Green Bay began to heat up and eventually used six-unanswered to pull within a pair at 52-50. Warrick answered with a jumper, but the Phoenix battled back to tie the game at 56.
  • A Warrick trey capped a 9-2 run by the Norse, only to see Green Bay run off the ensuing eight points in the game to push the Phoenix back out front by a point, 66-65.
  • Warrick had the answer for NKU, countering with a basket at the 1:13 mark.
  • Following a defensive stop, Böhm collected an offensive rebound and laid it in to give NKU a three-point margin, 69-66.
  • The Norse defense held tight and Nelson came up with a steal with just over three seconds remaining. Bryson Langdon sealed the 71-66 win with a pair of free throws.
GAME NOTES
  • Northern Kentucky shot 51.7 percent for the game, making an identical 15-of-29 attempts in both halves. Green Bay converted 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the floor.
  • Behind Böhm's seven boards and six caroms from Nelson, the Norse won the battle of the boards, 30-29.
  • Turnovers were kept at a minimum by both teams. Northern Kentucky matched its season low of six, set originally against UIC on Jan. 29. Green Bay only turned the ball over eight times.
  • The Norse got out in transition, outscoring the Phoenix 22-2. Northern Kentucky's previous high this season in transition scoring was 18 against Purdue Fort Wayne on Jan. 1.
  • NKU also dominated the paint to the tune of a 48-26 advantage. The 48 scored in the lane are the most in a game by the Norse this season, bettering the 38 scored against Robert Morris on Jan. 22.
  • Faulkner's 20-point effort is his sixth of the season.

Northern Kentucky returns to BB&T Arena to close out the regular season with two games against Wright State. Tip off on Friday, Feb. 19, is set for 6 p.m., while the Feb. 20 showdown will begin at 5 p.m.
