GREEN BAY, Wis. – Northern Kentucky volleyball's three-match winning streak came to a halt in Tuesday's five-set (11-25, 25-21, 15-25, 25-19, 15-11) setback to Green Bay. With the loss, NKU slips to 3-3 and GB moves to 3-5.
STAT LEADERS
· Anna Brinkmann registered 18 kills and 16 digs for her fourth-consecutive double-double to start the season.
· Miranda Wucherer contributed eight kills, 21 assists and 14 digs, narrowly missing a third-straight triple-double but still achieving a double-double for the fifth time this year.
· Abby Kanakry also terminated double-figure kills with 12
· Hitting at a .368 clip, Gentile also added 10 kills to the Norse cause.
· Leading the back row, Ashton Terrill picked up a match-high 29 scoops.
· With six aces on the afternoon, Anna Burke tied Northern Kentucky's single-match record in the Division I era.
· Katy Yopko distributed 30 assists for the Norse.
FIRST SET SUMMARY
· NKU scored the first three points only to see GB claim three of the next four, but Northern Kentucky responded and ran off four points in a row to force a timeout. The Norse run eventually extended to seven-straight as they took a 12-4 lead thanks to four aces and a pair of Phoenix service errors.
· The lead slowly expanded for the Norse, as they closed out the set, 25-11, on a Lillian Leiner ace.
· Serving played a pivotal role in the frame, as Northern Kentucky registered six total aces and added three more points on Green Bay service errors.
· Burke rattled off four aces in the frame.
· Brinkmann and Gentile paced the Norse offensively with three kills each, while the team converted 10 terminations behind a .364 hitting percentage.
· The Phoenix hit negative .043 in the set, registering just four kills and five errors.
SECOND SET SUMMARY
· Set No. 2 was marked by runs, opening with a 4-0 run from the Phoenix, only to see the Norse battle back to even the score at six.
· GB then surged ahead, 11-7, and forced NKU to call timeout, but the Norse responded to tie the score at 13.
· However, Green Bay drew the final straw and ran out to a 22-18 advantage en route to the 25-21 set win.
· Northern Kentucky hit .205 with 14 kills, but Green Bay terminated 16 attacks at a .375 clip.
THIRD SET SUMMARY
· With the third set tied at six, Northern Kentucky used a 6-0 run that was keyed by four Brinkmann terminations.
· NKU also reeled off another five-point spurt in which Wucherer contributed three kills that put the set out of reach before the Norse closed it out 25-15.
· As a team, Northern Kentucky hit an impressive .433 with 16 kills while limiting Green Bay to eight kills at an .091 hitting percentage.
· Brinkmann finished the set with six kills, while Wucherer and Kanakry added four each.
· Terrill was stout along the backline with eight digs.
FOURTH SET
· Green Bay charged out of the gates in the fourth set, forcing Northern Kentucky to call timeout in an 8-4 hole.
· The Norse continued to battle and eventually pulled within a point, 19-18, only to see the Phoenix respond with five-straight points.
· GB closed out the set, 25-19.
· Both teams finished with 14 kills in the frame, but NKU had six attack errors compared to GB's three.
· Serving for the Phoenix helped key their win in the set, as they registered four.
FIFTH SET
· NKU scored the first point of the fifth set, only to see GB run off six in a row, which included a Northern Kentucky timeout in the middle.
· However, the Norse answered with a 4-1 run to pull within a pair, 7-5, and force Green Bay to call a timeout.
· After the two teams split the next four points, The Phoenix laid claim to five of the next six to go ahead, 14-8.
· The Norse staved off three set points to force another Green Bay timeout, but ran out of late-match magic in the 15-11 setback.
MATCH NOTES
· Northern Kentucky finished the match with advantages in kills (58-49), aces (10-9) and digs (86-75).
· Terrill's 29 digs were just enough to move her into sole possession of second all-time on NKU's career charts. She now has 1,730 scoops in her career, surpassing Kerry Lewin's 1,729.
· Jenna Schreiver (9/8/12), Shelby Olsen (11/2/18) and Wucherer (9/21/19) are the three other Norse to have registered six aces in a match, as Burke did for the Norse today.
