@NKUNorseBSB suffer season-opening loss to ETSU, 10-3

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team took a loss in its first matchup of the 2021 season at ETSU, 10-3, on Saturday. Starting pitcher for ETSU Hunter Loyd (W, 1-0) is credited with the win, while Ben Gerl (L, 0-1) is tagged with the loss in his Norse debut.

AT THE PLATE
  • Freshman Josh Romans made his Norse debut at shortstop, going 1-for-3, which included an RBI double in the fifth frame.
  • Billy Marion batted one home in the third on a 1-for-5 outing.
  • Griffin Kain, who went 1-for-3, reached first base twice in the game and represented two of NKU's runs.
  • Griffin Doersching was 1-for-2 and represented the only other run for NKU.
  • Treyvin Moss had the only other hit in the game, ending the day 1-for-5.
ON THE MOUND
  • Gerl was atop of the mound for the first five innings, yielding six runs off of as many hits. He also delivered 12 strikeouts, five of which came in the fourth and fifth innings.
  • Bryson Lonsbury made a relief appearance, tossing the final three innings. He gave up four runs on three hits and a trio of walks.
KEY MOMENTS
  • After throwing a one-two-three inning to begin the game, ETSU rattled off three runs in their half of the inning.
  • Kain singled to center to kick off the third. After generating a good lead from first base, he bolted to second for the successful steal, allowing Marion to bring him home thanks to a single.
  • A pair of singles, a triple and a sacrifice gave the Buccaneers another three runs at the bottom of the third, bringing the ETSU lead to 6-1.
  • Doersching struck a blooper to centerfield to reach first an inning later. A throwing error by ETSU's pitcher brought the senior into scoring position at third base, allowing a Haas groundout to give the Norse a score.
  • Now settled in, Gerl nailed down a one-two-three inning of his own, allowing the Norse to inch closer again in the fifth. Kain was hit by a pitch to lead off and Romans cleaned up with a double down the left-field line, making it a 6-3 game in favor of ETSU.
  • After two clean innings for Lonsbury, ETSU homered twice in the bottom of the eighth to seal the game.
