KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Northern Kentucky fell to Central Michigan, 7-4, in its season opener, after a weather delay that lasted just over seven hours. The Norse drop to 0-1 on the season while the Chippewas move to 1-0.
At the Plate
- Ava Lawson was the leading hitter for the Norse with two hits, both of the extra-base variety. She had a double in the third and exited the yard in the fifth. Lawson now has 17 homers in her career, tying her with Sydni Ferrante for sixth all-time.
- Josie Frazier, Jordan Jenkins, Madi Mulder and Hailey Whitmer all ended the game with one hit a piece.
- Central Michigan out-hit Northern Kentucky, 9-6.
In the Circle
- Caitlin Kairo and Lauryn Hicks both spent time in the circle pitching, tossing 3.2 and 3.1 innings, respectively.
- Kairo registered three strikeouts without issuing a walk. She allowed eight hits and four runs, all earned.
- Hicks punched out six Chippewas and walked four. She allowed three runs, but only one was earned, on one hit. Hicks took the loss for NKU and falls to 0-1 on the year.
Scoring Summary
- Central Michigan scored the first run of the game off of a homerun in the first inning.
- The Chippewas scored their second run in the second inning, giving them a 2-0 lead.
- The Norse plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score. Mulder singled to plate Ella LeMonier, who was pinch running for Jenkins, and Whitmer crossed the plate on the play as well.
- In the middle of Megan Lenhart's at-bat in the second, play was halted due to heavy rainfall. In total, Lenhart waited 7:12 between pitches.
- O'Hair scored a run for NKU in the third inning to take the lead, 3-2. After being hit by a pitch, Lawson hit her double off of the center field wall.
- Central Michigan responded in the top of the 4th inning by driving in two runs.
- In the 5th inning, Lawson hit her first homerun of the season and made it a 4-4 game.
- In the final inning of play, the Norse were unable to contain the Chippewas as they scored three runs.
Next Up
After weather conditions slowed down play throughout the day, Northern Kentucky will now take on UT-Martin at 10 a.m. and Illinois State at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27.
