KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Northern Kentucky lost a pair of games on Saturday, falling, 9-6, to UT-Martin and, 4-0, to Illinois State. The Norse slip to 0-3 on the season while the Skyhawks move to 6-2 and the Redbirds improve to 3-2.
Game 1: UT-Martin 9, Northern Kentucky 6
At the Plate
- Jenna O'Hair and Madi Mulder were co-leaders in hits, with two to their names. O'Hair singled to the right side on her first hit of the day in the third inning and singled to left field in the fourth. Mulder singled to the left and up the middle in the second and fourth innings, respectively.
- Josie Frazier, Ava Lawson, Megan Lenhart, and Kendyl McKeough ended with one hit each.
- McKeough's hit was a single to left field in the top of the seventh inning. This is her first this season, and the first of her career with the Norse.
In the Circle
- Madisyn Eads, Faith Howard and Caitlin Kairo all spent time on the mound, seeing 2.0, 1.0, and 3.0 innings pitched, respectively.
- Eads and Howard saw nineteen batters between them, and gave up a combined five runs on as many hits.
- Kairo (0-1) saw action on the mound for the second-straight game. She allowed four runs on three hits and was credited with the loss.
Scoring Summary
- UT-Martin earned the first three runs of the game, scoring a pair in the first and a lone run in the second.
- Lenhart was the first to hit home for the Norse after an RBI single from O'Hair in the top of the third. Lawson had an RBI triple to right that scored O'Hair and Frazier, while Whitmer also earned herself an RBI on a groundout to second that saw Lawson reach the plate.
- The Skyhawks used a bases-loaded single to plate a pair of runs in their half of the third.
- NKU followed in the next inning with a pair of runs. Lozada scored on Frazier's single, and Frazier scored after stealing second and being driven home by O'Hair. This put the Norse ahead, 6-5.
- UT-Martin came alive in their half of the sixth inning and scored four runs, taking the lead back from Northern Kentucky, 9-6.
Game 2: Illinois State 4, Northern Kentucky 0
At the Plate
- The Redbirds out-hit the Norse 4-1.
- The lone NKU hit came in the fifth inning courtesy of a Megan Lenhart double to left center.
In the Circle
- Lauryn Hicks pitched for the second time in as many days and falls to 0-2 on the season after allowing four earned runs on the day.
- She threw 46 pitches while facing 23 batters and walked away with six strike outs.
Scoring Summary
- All four runs in the game came in the third inning. Emme Olson gave Illinois State its first three runs with a homer to right center that drove in Kaili Chval and Mack Leonard. The final run came from a delayed steal.
Next Up
Northern Kentucky will stay in Knoxville one more day and take on the 23rd ranked team in the country, the Tennessee Volunteers. The game is set to start at noon on Sunday, Feb. 28, and will be aired on SECN+.
