ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Northern Kentucky softball team continued its trend of splitting doubleheaders to open the 2021 Horizon League slate on Friday after dropping the opening game at Oakland, 5-0, before rebounding for a 5-2 win in game two. The Norse moved to 4-10 (3-3 Horizon League) and the Golden Grizzlies now stand at 5-5 (4-2 Horizon).
Triples were the name of the game for the Norse on Friday, as they hit two in each game.
Game 1: Oakland 5, NKU 0
At the Plate
In the Circle
- Lauryn Hicks (3-5) got the start in the circle, surrendering two runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings. Hicks struck out seven Golden Grizzlies and allowed one walk.
- Faith Howard pitched two innings of relief. Oakland tallied a trio of earned runs on three hits against Howard.
Scoring Summary
- The Norse used back-to-back-to-back singles from LeMonier, Mulder and McKeough with one out in the first inning to load the bases. But, NKU was unable to plate the run after a strikeout by Lawson and fielder's choice groundout from Jenkins.
- Oakland broke into the scoring column in the home half of the third courtesy of an RBI double.
- The Golden Grizzlies use a run-scoring single in the fourth to increase their lead to 2-0.
- A 3-run fifth opened a five-run advantage for Oakland. The first run came via a double, while the second two runs came via a single with bases juiced.
- NKU threatened in both the sixth and seven innings. Lawson and Margelot respectively clubbed two-out triples to put runners in scoring position, but the Norse couldn't manage to bring them home.
Game 2: NKU 5, Oakland 2
At the Plate
- McKeough went 2-for-3 at the dish, clubbing a solo homerun in the third inning.
- Lawson added her second triple of the day in a 1-for-3 performance. She drove in two runs and scored once herself. On the season, Lawson now has three triples.
- Maddie Lacer also tripled for the Norse, collecting an RBI in the process. She has tripled for the Norse in two of the last three games.
- Josie Frazier, LeMonier, Mulder and Kaylee McGinn also picked up hits.
In the Circle
- Caitlin Karo went the distance for the Norse and picked up the win, moving to 1-4 on the year
- She allowed just two runs, only one earned, in the six-hit effort.
- Karo registered a pair of strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Scoring Summary
- Frazier and Mulder singled in the first, setting up Lawson with a pair of ducks on the pond. She drove them home with her second triple of the day.
- Lawson then scored herself on a passed ball to put the Norse ahead, 3-0.
- Jenkins then drew a two-out walk and was driven home on Lacer's triple, giving the Norse a four-run cushion.
- McKeough provided NKU with an insurance run in the third when she cranked her second homer of the season.
- Oakland got one run back in the fourth and another in the seventh, but Karo was able to close the door.
