HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky men's basketball team advances in Horizon League tournament action with a thrilling 70-69 defeat over Detroit Mercy on Tuesday night. David Böhm converted a tip-in as the final horn sounded to lift the Norse to the win in dramatic fashion.
NKU moves to 14-10 on the season as Detroit Mercy drops to 12-10 overall.
STATS LEADERS
- Marques Warrick led the Norse in scoring with 20 points in his final game at BB&T Arena for the season. He went 7-for-14 (50 percent) from the floor while shooting 4-of-9 (44 percent) from three-point territory. Warrick added three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
- Bryson Langdon dropped 17 points on the Titans with six assists and two steals. His campaign featured a 7-for-15 (47 percent) outing from the floor.
- Böhm, the last-second hero, had nine other points to accompany his game-winner, bringing his total to 11. He shot 5-of-10 (50 percent) from the floor and brought down eight rebounds.
- Trevon Faulkner was the final Norse with a double-figure scoring effort as the junior notched 10 points in the game. He was one rebound shy from his third double-double on the year while adding four assists and a steal.
- Adrian Nelson snagged eight rebounds to go along with nine points.
TURNING POINT
- Böhm capped off the win with a roller-coaster buzzer-beater as time expired on the clock, lifting the Norse to the 70-69 win.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- Detroit Mercy jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but Warrick was quick to even up the scoreboard at seven apiece with a floater in the paint and a three on back-to-back plays.
- Through 10:16 of play, Warrick was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor and 3-of-3 from beyond the arc for 13 points to the Norse cause. NKU held the 21-16 advantage with his third three in the half.
- Langdon mimicked Warrick with a scoring run of his own, notching nine consecutive points for NKU. From 7:28-5:50, the junior secured an and-one and two deep range buckets. His second three in the span lifted the Norse ahead of the Titans, 31-30.
- The Norse held a three-point lead on the Titans, 40-37, at the half's end, despite UDM shooting at a 55 percent clip from the floor, a 50 percent clip from three range and 100 percent from the charity stripe.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- UDM again leaped out to a strong start with a 6-0 run against the Norse, taking the 43-40 lead with 17:14 remaining in the game.
- NKU battled, but the Titans claimed a 69-64 lead with 3:45 to left to play. UDM's 6-0 run to achieve the five-point lead would be the final points added to their scoring column on the night.
- Warrick knocked down two free throws with 2:49 to play, making the Titan advantage only three points. Nelson added a layup with twenty seconds remaining to put the Norse deficit at one.
- Böhm finished the game in electrifying fashion as his rebounding efforts finally turned into a bucket as the buzzer sounded, giving the Norse the 70-69 lead needed to continue the season.
GAME NOTES
- The 70-69 victory marks the second time a game has been a one-point decision for the Norse on the year. NKU previously lost to Ball State on Nov. 25 in a 74-73 result. This also marks the sixth one-possession game for the Norse through the season.
- The largest lead for either team throughout the competition was five points. UDM held a 69-64 lead with 3:45 remaining in the second half while NKU was at a 21-16 advantage with 10:58 on the clock in the first half.
- UDM was able to maintain a 51 percent field goal percentage and a 42 percent clip from deep range. The Titan's 13 threes ties the most on the season allowed by NKU, matching UIC's 13 on Jan. 29 as the Norse won, 72-68.
- NKU won the battle of the boards, 35-22.
