@NorseWBB ends season with Horizon League quarterfinal setback against Raiders

 
DAYTON, Ohio – The 2020-21 season came to a close for the Northern Kentucky women's basketball team in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Championship, as the Norse dropped a 74-56 decision against top-seeded Wright State on Tuesday afternoon. NKU concludes the season with an 8-11 record, which included a 7-5 mark in the Horizon League this year. WSU improves to 16-7 overall.
 
STATS LEADERS
  • Duvall was one of three Norse to reach double figures as she finished with 19 points. She also had a team high eight rebounds, all of which came on the defensive end.
  • Ivy Turner scored 16 points while shooting 40 percent (6-15) and Kailey Coffey dropped 11 on 66.7 percent (2-3).
  • Kennedy Igo totaled six assists, a career-high for the freshman.
 
TURNING POINT 
  • Wright State put together a 14-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters to take control of the game. Northern Kentucky battled back to a six-point deficit early in the third-quarter, but were unable to get any closer.
 
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • The Norse and the Raiders battled throughout the first quarter, with both teams shooting fairly even. Northern Kentucky shot 35.7 percent (5-of-14) while Wright State shot 37.5 (6-of-16).
  • Wright State held a 15-11 advantage through the first 10 minutes of play.
  • From the final 2:18 in the first quarter to 5:54 in the second, NKU was outscored 17-1 with a Coffey free throw being the lone point.
  • Northern Kentucky failed to score a basket for 11:22 spanning the two quarters, scoring on three free throws during the drought.
  • The Raiders improved their shot percentage to 46.7 percent overall (14-30) by shooting 57.1 percent (8-14) in the second quarter, while the Norse made 7.7 percent (1-13) in the stanza, falling to 22.2 percent overall (6-27). Wright State owned the lead at halftime 32-20.
 
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • The Norse came out hot to start the half thanks to a couple of threes courtesy of Turner. Her two triples were the first of the game for either team.
  • Wright State countered and pushed the lead back to double-figures before closing out the third with a 53-40 lead.
  • The Raiders hit 61.5 percent (8-13) in the quarter.
  • NKU's three-point defense was stout, holding Wright State scoreless from beyond the arc until the 7:24 mark in the fourth quarter. Prior to that point, they were 0-for-6.
  • The closest NKU climbed in the fourth quarter was with 5:20 remaining, when they came within nine points, 63-54.
  • Wright State ended the game shooting 56.6 percent (30-53) and outscored Northern Kentucky 21-16 in the fourth quarter.
 
GAME NOTES
  • With 19 points in today's game, Duvall registered double-figures in all 19 games this year.
  • Duvall averaged 24 points in NKU's two Horizon League Championship games.
  • Today marked Coffey's 110th start for the Norse, tying her for 7th most all-time at NKU. She also moved into 6th all-time on the career rebounding list after pulling down five in the game. She now has 808 rebounds.
  • Turner posted double-figure scoring in nine of the team's final 10 games, averaging 11.6 points per game over that span.
  • Ellie Taylor's five points in the contest matched her best mark of the season, which came in the Horizon League Championship opening round game against Robert Morris.
