Stellar pitching performances gives @NKUNorseBSB doubleheader sweep over Milwaukee

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky Baseball (8-10, 6-5 Horizon League) swept Milwaukee (2-12, 2-5 Horizon League) in both games of a doubleheader, 4-1 and 11-1, respectively behind incredible pitching performances at Bill Aker Baseball Complex on Saturday. NKU has won its last six games in a row, a new record for the Division I era and head coach Todd Asalon is one win away from the 700th of his career (699-657-1).

GAME 1: Northern Kentucky 4, Milwaukee 1

AT THE PLATE
  • Treyvin Moss, Jayden Wakeham, Billy Marion, Bryce Thomas, and Andrew Bacon all had a hit apiece.
  • Marion and Thomas both crushed a homer in the second inning.
  • Bacon's hit made its way down the left field line, resulting in an RBI-triple.
  • Seven Norse batters reached base by way of five hits, one batter being hit by a pitch and one walk.

ON THE MOUND
  • Kyle Klingenbeck (W, 2-2) pitched his second-consecutive complete game and was just one out away from getting the shutout label as well. He yielded just one run on two hits and a walk, while punching out five.
KEY MOMENTS
  • Marion and Thomas each had homers to right-centerfield, making it 2-0 in the second inning.
  • With Wakeham on third through a double and a groundout in the fourth, a wild pitch made its way past the catcher, allowing him to reach home and extend the lead for NKU.
  • Moss singled through the left side in the sixth and Bacon hit a shot down the left field line for a triple, giving the Norse the insurance run at 4-0.

GAME 2: Northern Kentucky 11, Milwaukee 1

AT THE PLATE
  • The Norse amassed 13 total hits between seven different batters.
  • Treyvin Moss (3-for-4, 4 RBI, BB) and Billy Marion (3-for-4, HR) both had incredible 3-hit performances.
  • Sam Hedges (2-for-4, RBI, BB) and John Odom (2-for-2) had two hits apiece.
  • Doersching (1-for-3, 2 BB), Jackson Haas (1-for-4, 2 RBI) and Josh Romans (1-for-4) all had one hit.
ON THE MOUND
  • Noah Richardson (W, 1-0) had his best game as a Norse with a seven-inning quality start. He allowed just one run on two hits and two walks, but the real story was his 14 strikeouts in the game. Richardson finished three K's short of Kyle Pfetzer's single-game record of 17 (vs. St. Xavier (Ill.) on March 13, 2000).
  • Nick Noble finished out the game with two innings of scoreless relief, yielding one run and fanning one.
KEY MOMENTS
  • Northern Kentucky scored three runs in the first inning. Two walks and a hit-by-pitch put Hedges, Doersching and Haas on base, respectively. The first run came from a wild pitch, scoring Hedges. Another pair of runs followed off a two-RBI single from Moss to right-center, bringing home Haas and Doersching.
  • Milwaukee earned a run of their own in the fourth, coming by way of an RBI-single through the left side.
  • In the bottom-half of the same frame, NKU pounded in eight runs. Singles from Marion and Odom, as well as a sacrifice bunt from Romans put runners on second and third. Back-to-back singles from Doersching and Hedges scored the pair and the bases became loaded with a walk from Bacon.
  • A Haas single and a throwing error on the play scored both Doersching and Hedges, while a deep double from Moss plated Bacon. Marion smacked his second long ball for another couple of runs, putting NKU up, 11-1.
