@NKUNorseSB splits a pair while picking up their first win of the season

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Northern Kentucky softball fell, 4-3, to Creighton on Saturday afternoon, but responded by downing Saint Louis, 6-5. The two-game split moves the Norse to 1-6 on the year, and sees Creighton pull even at 3-3 and Saint Louis fall to 0-5. 
 
Game 1: Creighton 4, Northern Kentucky 3 
At the Plate 
In the Circle  
  • Caitlin Karo pitched the entire game for the Norse and ended with four strikeouts. She faced 29 batters and gave up four runs on 10 hits, while registering four strikeouts and zero walks.
  • Karo was credited with the loss and moves to 0-2 on the season. 
Scoring Summary  
  • Just like the previous game, the Norse opened the scoring in the first inning. The run was credited to Frazier, who reached home on a passed ball. 
  • Frazier also earned the first RBI of the game during the second with a single to left field, driving in Lozada, who was pinch running for McKeough after she singled to open the inning.
  • Creighton answered in its half of the inning with a pair of runs coming from RBI singles to left and right, respectively. 
  • For the third-straight inning, NKU scored a lone run thanks to a throwing error that plated Lenhart. 
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Creighton hit a 2-run homer to take the lead 4-3 and win the game. 
Game 2: Northern Kentucky 6, Saint Louis 5 
At the Plate 
  • Northern Kentucky finished with eight hits among five players. 
  • McKeough ended with two hits, including a grand slam in the third inning. The grand slam is the first for NKU since Toree Stalter hit one against Iona on Feb. 25, 2019. She also led the team with four RBI. 
  • Frazier and Jenna O'Hair also finished with two hits apiece. 
  • LeMonier and Madi Mulder each earned a hit during the game. 
In the Circle 
  • Madisyn Eads was given the start for the second game of the day.
  • Eads pitched two innings and gave up four runs on three hits. She also struck out three of the twelve batters she faced. 
  • Lauryn Hicks entered in the third inning.
  • Hicks tossed 4.2 innings and gave up a single run while seeing 21 batters. She struck out six hitters, including the final batter of the game.
  • Hicks moves to 1-3 on the season after being credited with the win.
Scoring Summary 
  • Saint Louis opened scoring in its half of the first with an RBI off a fielder's choice.
  • The scoring continued for the Billikens in the second inning. They brought in another three runs with a 2-RBI double to center field and an RBI fly out to right field, respectively.
  • Northern Kentucky responded in the bottom of the inning. Whitmer walked and advanced on singles by both Mulder and McKeough.  O'Hair then knocked a single up the middle to plate Whitmer. 
  • McKeough hit a grand slam to left center in the third, giving the Norse a 5-4 lead. Singles by Frazier and LeMonier, plus a walk by Whitmer loaded the bases for McKeough.
  • LeMonier earned an RBI on a groundout that saw O'Hair score in the fourth to provided the Norse with their final run of the game.
  • Saint Louis inched closer with an RBI off a fly out in the sixth, but ultimately fell short as they were held scoreless in the final inning.
 
Next Up 
The Norse will stay in Illinois one more day and square off against the Billikens again on Sunday, March 7, at 3:30 p.m. (ET).
