HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky (12-15 Overall, 10-10 Horizon League) defeated Youngstown State (16-16 Overall, 11-10 Horizon League) Friday afternoon. The win closes the gap between the two teams in the Horizon League standings.
AT THE PLATE
- NKU batted .342 with 13 hits on 38 at bats.
- Noah Fisher (3-for-4) and Jayden Wakeham (3-for-4) were co-hit leaders for the Norse.
- Wakeham finished with a pair of doubles and a single.
- Sam Hedges (2-for-5) and Andrew Bacon (2-for-5) saw multiple hits on the day.
- Bacon had the first score with his second homerun of the season.
- Griffin Doersching (1-for-5), Treyvin Moss (1-for-3), and John Odom (1-for-4) all ended with a single hit.
ON THE MOUND
- Ben Gerl (W, 3-3) earned his eighth start on the year in as many appearances. Gerl tossed 8.0 innings and threw 124 pitches, the longest outing of his freshman campaign. He allowed four runs on eight hits and four walks.
- Tyler Ollier came on for relief to begin the ninth. He threw 11 pitches and faced three batters, giving up three runs.
- Kaleb Meeks (S, 1) was the third pitcher to see the mound, coming on with no outs in the ninth. He allowed just one hit and went screless for the final-three outs.
KEY MOMENTS
- With a lone out and a runner on first in the opening frame, Bacon hit a two-run homer to center field to give the Norse an early lead.
- Youngstown State scored a pair of runs to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the third. The first run was scored by way of a sac fly to deep center field, while the second was scored on a groundout to first.
- Northern Kentucky regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI-single from Moss that drove in Fisher. NKU then extended its lead with a 2-RBI single from Hedges and a 2-RBI double from Doersching.
- The Norse continued to make their presence known in the fifth, using a RBI double from Wakeham to make it 8-2.
- A sac fly to center field from the Penguins gave them their first run since the third inning in the sixth.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Fisher hit a shot to right center and made it to third. He reached home on the next at-bat as Wakeham hit a double to left field.
- YSU made it 9-4 with two outs in the eighth on a RBI single through the right side.
- The Penguins inched even closer with a three-run homer to make it 9-7 with no outs in the ninth.
