For second-straight day, @NKUNorseSB splits with PFW


HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky softball split Saturday's doubleheader with Purdue Fort Wayne, winning the first matchup, 3-2, and then falling to the Mastodons in the afternoon, 3-1. The Norse move to 9-21 on the year (8-14 Horizon League) with PFW shifting to 8-21 overall (7-18 Horizon League). 


Game 1: NKU 3, PFW 2
 
At the Plate 
  • Kendyl McKeough went 2-for-2 at bat. She had two singles, the first allowed her to reach second off a fielding error in right field. McKeough's second single of the game also tallied for one of the two RBIs recorded in the fifth.  
  • Josie Frazier went 1-for-3 with her one hit on the game turning into a run for the Norse with an RBI. 
  • Jordan Jenkins copied Frazier in the sixth inning to drive in the winning run as she went 1-for-3 for the game. Jenkins' hit made it to center field and allowed Ava Lawson to cross the plate, putting the Norse up, 3-2. 
     
In the Circle 
  • Faith Howard began and ended the game for the Norse, pitching 58 strikes on 98 throws. Through her seven innings, she allowed five hits, two runs and two walks.  
  • Howard improves to 2-3 on the season. 
  • PFW's Shaina Eyre pitched the entire game as well, allowing six hits, three runs and two walks across the six innings. She moves to 5-11 on the year. 
 
Scoring Summary 
  • The Mastodons struck first with a run in the third inning that came from an Olivia Stansbury fly ball to left field, allowing Ashley Haas to cross home plate.
  • PFW took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth as Haas again scored for the Mastodons on a throwing error committed by the Norse.
  • NKU retaliated in the fifth inning beginning with a hit by Frazier allowing Sophie Margelot to score from third base. McKeough followed up with an RBI of her own, driving in Jenna O'Hair to tie up the score at 2-2.  
  • NKU claimed the lead at 3-2 in the sixth with Lawson crossing the plate off a Jenkins hit to center field. 



Game 2: PFW 3, NKU 1 
 
At the Plate 
  • McKeough, Madi Mulder, Jenkins, Margelot and Ella LeMonier each went 1-for-3 at the plate. McKeough's hit was a homerun for the Norse and marked NKU's solo run for the game.  
  • Mackenzie Mitchell picked up a hit in a 1-for-2 showing.
     
In the Circle 
  • Madisyn Eads got the start for NKU and completed all seven innings. Eads allowed six hits, three runs and a solo walk. She moves to 1-3. 
  • PFW's Jadelyn Johnson collected a win to improve to 2-5 as she pitched all seven innings. Johnson allowed six hits and one run, without issuing a walk. 
 
Scoring Summary 
  • Haas sent a solo homerun down the left field line, putting the Mastodons ahead, 1-0, in the third. Stansbury followed in the same inning with a single to left field, allowing Madeline Swart to reach third and eventually home on a Norse throwing error. 
  • McKeough's solo homerun in the fourth was NKU's only scoring effort. 
  • PWF's Kennedy Steele tallied an RBI as her single to left field in the sixth allowed Stansbury to score. 
 
Up Next 
NKU has a four-game series against IUPUI coming up on Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24. Each day features a doubleheader against the Jaguars beginning at noon.
