Wright State wins both games of doubleheader with @NKUNorseBSB

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky Baseball team (13-21, 11-16 Horizon League) dropped both games of a doubleheader to Wright State (18-10, 17-3 Horizon League) by scores of 12-2 and 11-6, respectively. The Raiders sweep the series with the win and move to 8-0 against the Norse this season.
GAME 1: Wright State 12, Northern Kentucky 2
AT THE PLATE ON THE MOUND
  • Kyle Klingenbeck (L, 3-5) went the first 2.1 innings atop the bump, allowing nine runs on seven hits and four walks.
  • Blaine Walters dished for the next 3.2 innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits and a walk.
  • Tyler Murphy threw five pitches in the seventh, recording one out before being hit in the knee with a liner.
  • Kurt Lange replaced Murphy, closing out the game with a scoreless appearance.
KEY MOMENTS
  • Wright State kicked off the day with four runs in the top of the first, which included a three-run homer.
  • The Raiders put two on to lead off the second, allowing a double and a sacrifice fly to left-center to score two more.
  • Wakeham singled through the right side to begin NKU's half of the second and Gick cleared the centerfield wall on a 2-1 count, giving the Norse their first couple of runs.
  • Three more Raider runs plated in the third inning.
  • A throwing error gave Wright State a runner that stole second and third. The runner made it home through a double to left, making it 10-2 Raiders.
  • A batter hit by a pitch and a walk began the sixth for Wright State and a double to left scored the pair.
GAME 2: Wright State 11, Northern Kentucky 6
AT THE PLATE ON THE MOUND
  • Bryson Lonsbury started the game and went the first four innings. He allowed five earned runs on six hits and four walks. He also punched out three.
  • J.T. McGee worked for 2.2 innings, yielding two runs on four hits.
  • Kaleb Meeks gave up just a hit in 1.1 innings.
  • Nick Noble closed out with the final inning of play, allowing three runs on four hits.
KEY MOMENTS
  • Two home runs batted in four runners for the Raiders at the top of the first.
  • Wright State followed the strong opening-frame with a leadoff double and two-consecutive walks, which allowed a sacrifice fly to centerfield make it a 5-0 game.
  • Hedges made it on base with a chopper through the right side to begin the third. Doersching followed up with a double that hit the right-field fence to give NKU its first score.
  • A leadoff homer in the fourth extended Wright State's lead to 6-1.
  • NKU brewed a big fourth inning after Haas, Fisher and Odom had a single and a pair of walks, respectively. Romans later came to the plate and batted a right field single that would score all three. He was credited with two RBIs on the play, as Odom came home on a throw trying to tag him out at second.
  • Romans made his way to third through the throw that attempted a put out on Odom and plated thanks to a Hedges infield single. Northern Kentucky was down just a single run, 6-5, after the chaotic fourth frame.
  • Wright State drilled a solo homer to inch forward to a two-run lead in the sixth.
  • A double and back-to-back singles gave the Raiders another run an inning later, making it 8-5.
  • The Raiders tallied three more runs in the ninth.
  • A single up the middle by Moss and a double by Fisher gave Northern Kentucky its final run of the day.
