@NKUNorseWSOC claims Horizon League Regular Season Championship with 2-0 victory over Wright State on senior day

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team (7-1-1, 7-0-1 Horizon League) finished its Horizon League slate undefeated on Monday at NKU Soccer Stadium, defeating Wright State, 2-0, to clinch the regular season title.

"This has been a tremendous team," said head coach Bob Sheehan. "This has not been easy for really every team in the country, but this team in particular has worked incredibly hard and has been really resilient. Defensively, we have given up very little all year and that continues to be the case.

"At halftime at 0-0, we just felt like it was a matter of finding a goal. Kailey had an incredible [one-versus-one] effort and placed the ball beautifully. It was a really nice team goal with Lindsey to Kayla battling for the ball and Annie blasted a shot in. Tremendous for Annie for her first goal and obviously for Kailey, on senior day, it's pretty special to have the game-winner."

NKU SCORING SUMMARY

BETWEEN THE POSTS

  • Mimi Stines collected yet another solo shutout on the year, facing three shots, all of which were on goal.

MATCH SUMMARY

  • It was not an easy first half for NKU. Wright State did a great job defensively and controlled possession, and placed a tough on-target shot in the 13th minute.
  • Wypasek sent in a couple of shots in the 22nd and 23rd minutes, respectively, with the first being on goal to the lower left.
  • Kiley Keehan had a great opportunity in the 24th minute, but her shot was saved down the middle.
  • A defensive stalemate ensued to close out the half, with each side making a combined 15 substitutions trying to find an edge.
  • NKU's energy offensively was much stronger in the beginning of the second half. Ivins took a pass and dribbled all the way from midfield to the penalty area and struck in the first goal of the day in 49th minute.
  • The Norse won a pair of corner kicks in the 59th and 62nd minutes, respectively, but the score held at 1-0.
  • Meyer won a ball in the 75th minute and dished to Wypasek, which caused chaos in the box. Greene found the ball to blast a shot in, placing some insurance on a Norse victory.
  • Despite fresh legs coming in for the Raiders at the end of the game and two on-target shots, NKU's defensive effort ensured another shutout to close the match out.

NORSE NOTES

  • NKU secures its first-ever Horizon League season title with the victory. The feat also ends a five-year run of Milwaukee winning the regular season title.
  • Norse women's soccer finishes undefeated in conference action for the first time in the Division I era and the fifth time as a program.
  • Stines picks up her fifth-straight solo-shutout, which is a Division I era record for the Norse. She is one consecutive solo-shutout away from tying the school record, which was done by Rachael Wood between Sept. 3-19, 2010.
  • Stines also moves to sixth all-time for the Norse in goalkeeper wins (16) and fifth in career shutouts (10).
  • NKU's six wins in a row is the most of the Division I era and the most since a span of eight in a row in the 2011 season.
  • Ivins picks up her ninth career goal and reaches 30 points in her time as a Norse as well. She is up to four goals and one assist this year.
  • Greene collects her first career goal with the netted shot.

UP NEXT
