ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Northern Kentucky Baseball team (14-23, 11-17 Horizon League) fell to Oakland (13-23, 7-18 Horizon League) on Friday afternoon at Oakland Baseball Field.

AT THE PLATE

  • Billy Marion went 3-for-4 on the day, which included an extra-base hit. He also represented two Norse runs.
  • John Odom cleaned up for two RBIs, finishing 2-for-4 in the game.
  • Jayden Wakeham (2-for-4) was the other Norse with two hits.
  • Both Griffin Doersching (1-for-4, BB) and Noah Fisher (1-for-3) smacked solo home runs.
  • Treyvin Moss (1-for-4) also registered a hit.

ON THE MOUND

  • Ben Gerl (L, 3-6) went the first 7.1 innings from atop the mound, allowing all nine runs on 11 hits and two walks.
  • Tyler Ollier was the closer for the Norse, recording the final two outs with just one walk to his name.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Northern Kentucky was the first on the board in the second inning. A Moss single, a Marion double and a walk generated by Gick loaded the bases for the Norse, followed by a single to left-center by Odom to plate two.
  • Fisher blasted a solo shot to left field in the Norse half of the fourth, extending NKU's lead to 3-0.
  • A home run and an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth for the Golden Grizzlies trimmed the Norse lead to just one run.
  • Oakland took the lead in the sixth, hitting a three-run homer to make it a 5-3 ball game.
  • With none on, Doersching brought the Norse back within one an inning later, homering toward left-center on a 3-1 count.
  • After finally getting the Golden Grizzlies' starter out in the eighth, NKU went to work and had base hits from Wakeham and Marion, while Gick was hit by a pitch to put runners on all three bags. A pinch-hitting Bryce Thomas reached base through fielder's choice and a throwing error on the play by Oakland's shortstop allowed two total runs to make it home, giving the Norse a 6-5 advantage.
  • The Golden Grizzlies were also productive in their half of the eighth, batting in a grand slam to claim in the victory.

UP NEXT

  • The Norse continue their series with the Golden Grizzlies with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
