Men take sixth; Women claim seventh at 2022 Horizon League XC Championships

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Northern Kentucky men's and women's cross country programs ran their best races of the season as the men finished sixth while the women claimed seventh at the 2022 Horizon League Championships that ran through the Oakland Cross Country Course on a foggy, turned sunny Saturday afternoon.

NOTABLES
- Northern Kentucky collected the hardware at the meet, as Natnael Weldemichael was named the Horizon's Male Freshman of the Year while Kyle Mastin and Megan Cole earned Second Team All-Horizon League honors. Weldemichael was the first NKU student-athlete to earn Freshman of the Year honors since Andrew Schille claimed the top prize for first year students in 2015. It was the third career All-Horizon award for Mastin on the course, while Cole claimed her first career All-League honor. - The men finished sixth overall with 156 points while the women took seventh with 186 points. It was the best finish for the Norse men since 2020 and the lowest point total scored since 2018. The seventh-place finish tied last year's result for the NKU women.
- For the men, Mastin led the pack with a 12th-place finish with a time of 25:23.6 over the 8K course. Weldemichael was right behind in 20th (25:49.7) while Nicholas Lee (in 37th, 26:25.8) and Owen Mathews (in 39th, 26:25.8) made it four Norse in the Top-40. Colton O'Hara rounded out the NKU scoring attack in 48th at 26:47.8.
- On the Northern Kentucky women's side, Cole paced the group with a 12th-place finish overall at 22:29.0. The rest of the Norse followed behind in a tight pack as Sophia DeLisio took 33rd (23:24.9), Jacquelyn Witt claimed 34th (23:32.1), Chloe Boa finished 53nd (24:30.4) and Yasmin Garcia made up the rest of the NKU scoring attack in 55th (24:39.5).  
NEXT UP
The Norse will take a short rest from competition before heading back down to Louisville for the NCAA Southeast Regionals, set for Friday, Nov. 11 at E.P "Tom" Sawyer State Park. The women's 6K race will take place at 11 AM ET while the men's 10K event will follow at 12 PM ET.
