@NKUNorseWBB begins HL Tournament hosting No. 12 seed Detroit

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky women's basketball kicks off the Horizon League Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will host No. 12 seed Detroit Mercy inside BB&T Arena on Tuesday, March 1 at 7 p.m. (ET).

NORSE Breakdown
•  Northern Kentucky enters the 2021-22 Horizon League Tournament as the No. 5 seed, and the Norse will face off against No. 12 seed Detroit Mercy in round one inside BB&T Arena on March 1.
•  The Norse are 5-6 all-time when playing in the Horizon League Tournament as NKU looks to make the trip to Indianapolis this season.
•  Trinity Thompson was named the Nike® #HLWBB Freshmen of the Week for Feb. 28 after she recorded her first career double-double (12 points, 13 rebounds) in the win over Detroit Mercy.
•  The Horizon League announced the 2021-22 All-League awards on Monday, Feb. 28 which saw several Norse recognized for their efforts this year. Grayson Rose was named the Defensive Player of the Year along with earning All-Defensive Team honors. Lindsey Duvall and Ivy Turner were each selected to the All-League Second Team, and Khamari Mitchell-Steen earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team.
•  Rose is ranked for 14th overall in the nation in total blocks. She is also ranked 16th in the country in blocks per game. She has been a force on the glass this season, ranking 53rd in the nation in total rebounds with 244. She ranks 67th overall in boards per game with at 9.0 as well.
•  Freshman Mitchell-Steen is third overall in the Horizon League in total steals with 52.
•  Duvall currently ranks third overall in the Horizon League in scoring average with 16.9 points per game. Duvall is first in the conference in total points however, with 457. She is also   seventh overall in rebounding in the conference at 7.4 boards per game.
• Duvall's incredible streak of scoring in double-digits in every single game she has worn a Northern Kentucky uniform was snapped at UIC (Feb. 1) earlier this week. Her impressive streak lasted 37 consecutive games.
• Kailee Davis was named the Nike Horizon League Freshman of the Week during the week of Jan. 10-16.
• Turner was named the Nike Horizon League Player of the Week during the week of Nov. 20-28.
• Duvall was named the Nike Horizon League Player of the Week during the week of Dec. 6-12 and during the week for Dec. 27-Jan. 2.
• Duvall and Turner each received conference accolades with Duvall earning Horizon League Preseason All-League First Team and Turner getting an All-League Second Team nod.
• The Norse were picked to finish fourth in the 2021-22 Horizon League Preseason Coaches Poll.
• The Norse finished the 2020-21 season eighth overall in the Horizon League. NKU defeated Robert Morris in the first round of the conference tournament before falling to rival and number one seed Wright State in the quarterfinals.
 

Scouting the Titans
No. 12 seed Detroit Mercy enters the opening round of the Horizon League Tournament with an overall record of 1-28 and are currently 1-21 in conference play. The Titans have been led by a trio of scorers this season which includes Sydney Searcy scoring 10.5 points per game, Brandi Washington at 91 ppg and Irene Murua at 9.0 ppg. Murua is also the teams leading rebounder at 7.0 boards per game. UDM is coming off back-to-back road losses against Wright State, falling 71-67, and NKU at 67-44. 
 


Series Stuff
Northern Kentucky leads the all-time series between these two programs 11-3 overall. The Norse downed UDM earlier this season in Detroit by a final score of 74-54, and once again at home by a final score of 67-44. NKU is 6-1 all-time when playing in Highland Heights, Ky. NKU is on a ten-game win streak against the Titans as well.
