HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky's six-game winning streak ended Saturday at the hands of hot-handed Detroit Mercy, which rode four double-figure scorers to a 74-68 win at BB&T Arena. The Norse (12-10, 8-5 Horizon League) pulled within two points in the final seconds but the Titans (9-11, 6-4) fended off a comeback.
The game capped NKU's five-game home stand, during which the Norse went 4-1 and upended league leaders Cleveland State and Oakland.
STATS LEADERS
- Trevon Faulkner led NKU with 18 points and converted all five of his free throws.
- Bryson Langdon scored a season-high 17 points behind 4-of-5 perimeter shooting.
- Marques Warrick scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half.
- Chris Brandon retrieved a team-high eight rebounds and added four points.
TURNING POINT
- Trevon Faulkner tied the game at 55 on a 3-pointer with 5:43 to play but Antoine Davis answered with a triple of his own and the Titans never relinquished control.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- Chris Brandon, a three-year player at Detroit Mercy before transferring to NKU, started the game with active hands and grabbed two rebounds with two points in the first three minutes.
- Trevon Faulkner scored six of NKU's first 12 points and converted a 3-point play that unlocked an early tie. The Norse's scoring came amid droughts, and a 6-0 Titans spurt evolved into a 9-3 run.
- Bryson Langdon converted two key 3-pointers, including one that made it a one-possession game with 8:20 left. The Norse went more than three minutes without scoring after that. Trevon Faulkner ended the stretch with a triple.
- NKU made only two field goals in the half's last 8:20 and Detroit Mercy led at the break, 33-27.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- The Titans parlayed a 9-0 run into a 42-29 lead less than four minutes into the second half. D.J. Harvey's putback gave the visitors their biggest lead (13 points) of the game.
- Bryson Langdon rattled off six straight points within an 11-2 run that inched NKU within four. The Norse ignited their offense through their defense.
- Sam Vinson made his first basket, a 3-pointer, with 8:45 left for a 50-49 NKU lead. The Titans responded with back-to-back triples.
- D.J. Harvey made two free throws with 16 seconds left. Although Bryson Langdon's 3-pointer with 3 seconds left brought NKU within two, the home team came no closer. Antoine Davis and Madut Akec combined for four free throws to close out the game.
GAME NOTES
- The Titans scored 17 points off NKU turnovers and won the rebounding battle 28-21. The Norse's 21 boards were a season low.
- Antoine Davis, the son of Detroit Mercy coach Mike Davis, scored a team-high 19 points and increased his career total to 2,482 points.
- NKU shot 48.9% throughout. Detroit Mercy shot 52.9%.
