@NKUNorseSB drops pair to UIC in #HLSB action

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky fell twice to UIC in a Horizon League double-header, first 7-4 and then 12-1, Saturday at Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.
 
The Flames won the series 2-1 following the Norse's Friday afternoon victory. NKU dropped to 13-18 (3-6 Horizon League) with the defeats.
 
GAME ONE: UIC 7, NKU 4
At the Plate In the Circle
  • Alicia Flores (2-6) surrendered four hits and four runs in a rocky start before Lauryn Hicks took over in the third inning. Flores walked one and struck out one. She threw 67 pitches, 37 of which came in the first inning.
  • In five innings of work, Hicks gave up four hits and three runs. She struck out 10 and walked none.
At a Glance
  • UIC's Tara McElligott hit two-run home runs in the tops of the first and third innings to give the Flames a league they did not relinquish.
  • Maddie Lacer got the Norse on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning.
  • The Norse piled on three runs via three hits in the sixth inning and took advantage of two UIC errors. Jordan Jenkins reached base on the first error and Maddie Lacer, who'd doubled, scored. Trinity Robertson and Tatum Biddle singled before Sophie Margelot reached on a fielder's choice.
  • Then Olivia Pastin reached on an error, which allowed Biddle and Hicks (pinch running for Robertson) to cross home plate and make it a 7-4 outing. The Norse drew no closer.
 
GAME TWO: UIC 12, NKU 1
At the Plate In the Circle
  • Madisyn Eads (8-6) absorbed the loss. In 2.2 innings, she gave up six hits and six runs, five earned, with one strikeout, no walks and a hit batsman.
  • Lauryn Hicks pitched four innings, surrendering nine hits, six runs (all earned), striking out four, walking one and throwing three wild pitches.
At a Glance
  • The Norse started a second straight game playing from behind, as the Flames scored two runs in the top of the first.
  • NKU scored in the bottom of the inning. Ella LeMonier reached on a bunt, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. LeMonier scored on Maddie Lacer's sac fly RBI.
  • UIC, up 2-1, erupted for five runs in the top of the third. The Flames amassed six hits during a two-out rally.
  • The Flames also scored five runs in the top of the seventh, propelled by five hits. The visitors finished with 15 hits throughout. NKU had six.
Next Up
NKU travels to Cleveland State for a three-game series. The Norse play a double-header at Viking Field on Tuesday, April 5 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The teams return to action on Wednesday, April 6 for a single game at 11 a.m.
