@NKUNorseSB downs Detroit Mercy to open series

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky Softball (21-26, 10-12 Horizon) started the weekend off on the right foot by taking down Horizon League opponent Detroit Mercy (4-33, 4-18 Horizon) by a final score of 3-1 at home Friday afternoon. 
 
At the Plate
  • Kendyl McKeough posted a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and one run scored. McKeough's leads the Norse with 11 total homers now and 30 RBI. 
  • Olivia Pastin belted a solo home run of her own to finish the day 1-for-3 with one run scored as well. 
  • Jordan Jenkins, Ella LeMonier and Maddie Lacer all chipped in hits for the Norse in the win also. Lacer posted an RBI and a double as well. 
     
In the Circle
  • Lauryn Hicks (5-7) was dominant in the circle against the Titans, throwing a complete game and only allowed three hits and zero earned runs. Hicks totaled six strikeouts on the day as well to pick up the victory. 
     
At a Glance
  • NKU jumped on the board in the bottom of the first with a Kendyl McKeough solo home run to right center field.
  • The Norse provided some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with an solo homer from Olivia Pastin to left field.
  • Maddie Lacer then hammered an RBI double to center field which drove in Ella LeMonier for the 3-0 lead.
  • Detroit Mercy tacked on a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single up the middle but Lauryn Hicks went on to shut down the Titans for the 3-1 win.  
     
Next Up
  • Northern Kentucky returns to Frank Grein Field tomorrow, Saturday, April 30, with a doubleheader against Detroit Mercy. Game one between the Norse and the Titans is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET).
