YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Northern Kentucky Softball (27-27) continued to roll at the 2022 Horizon League Championship as the No. 6 seeded Norse pulled off yet another upset, this time over No. 2 seeded Cleveland State (22-23) Thursday afternoon by a score of 5-4
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
- The Norse struck first against No. 2 seeded Cleveland State, as Olivia Pastin reached first safely after a fielding error from the Viking second basemen. This led to Sydni Barnes crossing the plate to give NKU the 1-0 lead.
- Two batters later saw Trinity Robertson draw a bases loaded walk as another run crossed the plate for the Norse and hold a 2-0 advantage.
- Kendyl McKeough belted a two-run homer in the top of the second inning to left field which extended the Northern Kentucky lead out to 4-0 overall.
- Cleveland State got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with a single to first base that brought home the runner from third to trail NKU 4-1.
- The Vikings tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie up the game at 4-4 overall with an RBI triple and single.
- Northern Kentucky fought right back as Pastin came up clutch once again with the RBI single to left field to bring in Barnes to the 5-4 lead.
- Madisyn Eads finished the game out with a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh against the Vikings to help the Norse advance once again.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Kendyl McKeough finished the afternoon going 1-for-3 with one home run, two RBI and one run scored.
- Lauryn Hicks posted yet another solid outing in the circle, as she threw 4.0 total innings against the Vikings. Hicks finished the day with three strikeouts, allowing six hits and just one earned run in her second straight day of work.
- Olivia Pastin continued to step up for NKU in big moments, finishing the day with one hit and what proved to be the game-winning RBI single in the sixth inning.
- Madisyn Eads (W, 11-11) picked up the win after providing 3.0 scoreless innings of relief for the Norse. Eads ended the day only allowing two hits against the 10 batters she faced.
- Ella LeMonier went 1-for-3 against CSU and showed off her speed on the base paths with two stolen bases.
- Sydni Barnes turned in the only multi-hit day for NKU, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

Northern Kentucky Softball advances to day three of the 2022 Horizon League Softball Championships, where the No. 6 seeded Norse will face the No. 1 seeded Golden Grizzlies of Oakland tomorrow, Friday, May 13 at 2:30 p.m. (ET). This will be game number eight of the #HLSB Championship.
