Cross Country shows out at Horizon League Championships

DAYTON, Ohio – The Northern Kentucky cross country program showed out at the 2023 Horizon League Championships behind two all-conference showings by Colton O'Hara and Sophia DeLisio and a Women's Freshman of the Year performance by Layla Henderson as the Norse took on the Horizon at Fairborn Community Park on Saturday.
 
THE BASICS
RESULTS: Men: 8th (197 points) | Women: 6th (152 points)

NOTABLES
- The men got the day started with their 8K Championship race where they were led by Colton O'Hara who claimed 14th overall with a new personal best of 24:45.19. With the performance, O'Hara was named Second Team All-League and became the first men's student-athlete since 2018 to be honored on the league's All-Conference Second Team. - Natnael Weldemichael, who was returning from injury, made his presence felt in a big way as he took 20th at 24:53.54. - The rest of the NKU top-five was rounded out by Jacob Line (57th, personal best 26:03.96), Owen Mathews (67th, 26:22.99) and Summit Northrup (73rd, personal best 26:36.79). - As a squad, NKU posted 197 points to take eighth overall at the conference championship.
- The women followed it up with an even more impressive showing in their 6K Championship race.
- The Norse were paced by Sophia DeLisio who was named Second Team All-League after she finished 11th overall with a new personal best of 21:39.58. - Layla Henderson earned the Horizon League's Freshman of the Year after she placed 19th with a personal record of 22:07.14. She became the first student-athlete in school history to earn the conference Women's Freshman of the Year honor. - The rest of the NKU top-five was completed by Grace Biddle (21st, personal best 22:22.89), Jacquelyn Witt (46th, personal best 23:21.71) and Julia Verhoff (64th, personal best 23:51.68). - As a team, the Northern Kentucky women finished with 152 points for a sixth-place finish, the squad's best team-finish since 2020.  
NEXT UP
The Norse will now turn their attention to the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional, hosted by South Carolina Upstate at the Roget Milliken Center on Friday, November 10.
