COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Northern Kentucky softball program continued its strong run of play at the Texas A&M Invitational as the Norse took two top NCAA programs down to the wire on the second day of their stay in College Station, Texas.
The Norse dropped back-to-back heartbreakers, with a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Big Ten power Michigan State in extras, followed by another tightly-contested 6-5 setback to the WAC's Tarleton State.
NKU trailed in both games entering the top of the seventh, where both times the Norse were able to push runs across the plate.
THE BASICS (GAME ONE)
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 3, Michigan State – 4 (eight innings)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Two Norse collected three hits in the contest as
Ella LeMonier went 3-for-4 and
Trinity Robertson also put up a 3-for-4 game to go with a RBI.

Jena Rhoads continued her strong start to the season as the freshman went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a walk.

Sydni Barnes also had a RBI for the Norse.

Megan Kennedy,
Hannah Colbert and
Brielle DiMemmo all scored runs for NKU.
- The game was split in the circle between
Madisyn Eads and
Lauryn Hicks. Eads went 4.1 innings and allowed just five hits and two runs (one earned). Hick added three innings of work with three hits and two runs allowed (one earned). Both pitchers had a strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Norse and Spartans played two scoreless innings before Michigan State was able to push two runs across in the bottom of the third to take an early lead.
- The Norse struck back in the top of the six off a RBI double to right center by Robertson and Barnes followed her with a based load walk to tie the game at 2-2.
- Michigan State took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2.
- With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the seventh for the Norse, Rhoads broke through with a single through the right side on a 2-2 count to tie the game at 3-3 for NKU.
- In the top of the eight Northern Kentucky was able to move the runner to third, but Michigan State was able to get out of the jam. The Spartans got the winning run across in the bottom of the inning with one out as MSU escaped with the 4-3 win.

Tatum Biddle paced the Norse attack with two RBI on a 2-for-4 game at the plate.

Trinity Robertson also had a strong game with a 2-for-2 performance with a RBI and a run scored.

Ella LeMonier went 2-for-4 at the dish with a run scored.

Sydni Barnes (two) and J Rhoads (one) also added runs for the Norse.

Maddie Lacer added a RBI in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Norse got right to work with four runs in the top of the first inning. Robertson, Lacer and Biddle each recorded a RBI in the opening frame.
- It didn't take long for Tarleton State to respond as the Texas put up four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 4-4.
- Tarleton State took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the third at 5-4.
- NKU entered the top of the seventh down a run and started the inning with a baserunner off a Tarleton State error. Robertson followed it with a double to left center. After a Norse out, Biddle tied the game with a single through the right side to make it 5-5.
- Tarleton State answered right back in the bottom of the inning to get away with the 5-4 victory.
