Lockdown Defense Powers Norse to Road Victory

LA JOLLA, Calif.  – Northern Kentucky Norse Women's Basketball entered Thursday's matchup with the UC San Diego Tritons looking to get back on track, wrapping up the non-conference portion of their schedule this weekend. Mya Meredith, Kamora Morgan, and the Norse defense all proved to be big parts of a gritty 58-50 victory as NKU snapped its cold streak.

THE FACTS
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 58, UC San Diego – 50
LOCATION: LionTree Arena - La Jolla, Calif.
RECORDS: NKU: 3-9 (0-2 HL), UCSD: 3-9 (1-1 BW)

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
- Mya Meredith recorded not only her first collegiate double-double, but the first double-digit rebound game by any Norse player this season. A stellar stat line, Meredith posted 16 points, 13 rebounds, three steals, and three assists, her best-ever game statistically in a Norse uniform.
- Kamora Morgan led the Norse in scoring for the third time this season, as the freshman guard put up 17 points on 7-15 shooting while adding five boards and three assists.
- Jaci Jones scored nine points for the Norse, and it all came in a matter of four minutes, nailing a trio of threes midway through the third quarter that helped the Norse pull away. She also pulled down six rebounds and recorded three assists.
- The Norse dominated the Tritons on the glass, winning the rebound battle 47-33. It marks the second time this season the Norse have out-rebounded their opponent, moving to a 2-0 record in such games.

NORSE NOTES
- For the first time since February 23, 2023, the Norse held their opponent to 50 points or less. NKU limited the Triton offense to 20 makes on 60 field goal attempts, including 4-18 from behind the arc. In particular, it was the second quarter that saw the Norse dominate on defense, allowing just one field goal in the quarter as UCSD scored just four points in the period.
- Thursday's game saw the return of graduate forward Halle Idowu, who had missed Sunday's game with an injury. Idowu started the scoring for the Norse, sinking a turnaround jumper. The Norse and Tritons battled in the first, but UCSD broke a 15-all tie to end the quarter with a late three.
- The Norse were able to keep UC San Diego from scoring for the first 7:35 of the second quarter, which allowed the Norse to take a nine-point lead that the Tritons never got back. Jones' three-point barrage in the third ensured the Norse kept a multiple-possession lead for the final 8:40 of the third quarter, while consistent scoring from Morgan and Meredith gave the Norse enough offensive firepower to hang on through the fourth. UCSD underwent another scoreless stretch in the fourth quarter, one that lasted just over five and a half minutes. A three by Noelle Hubert with four minutes to go felt like the dagger, and a couple driving layups from Meredith ensured a Norse victory.
