Baseball remains perfect in conference play with thriller over Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Northern Kentucky baseball program won a 4-2 thriller over Youngstown State in a conference clash at Eastwood Field on Thursday evening.
 
With the win, the Norse remain in first place in the conference with a perfect mark of 7-0 in Horizon play. The seven-game Horizon League winning streak is currently the fourth longest active conference streak in all of NCAA Division I baseball.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Tanner Gillis threw an absolute gem with eight innings of standout work. He recorded 10 strikeouts to go with just five hits and two earned runs allowed. The 10 strikeouts tied for the most recorded by a Horizon student-athlete so far this season.
- Liam McFadden-Ackman played the hero role with a game-winning hit in the top of the ninth. He finished 3-for-5 overall with two RBI.
- Cleary Simpson had yet another strong outing with a 1-for-2 afternoon that included one RBI and two walks.
- John Odom chipped in a 1-for-4 performance with a RBI and a run.
- Tyler Shaneyfelt rounded out the NKU attack with a 1-for-2 day. He finished with one run scored and two bases on balls.
- Nick McClanahan closed things out with a scoreless ninth. He posted two punchouts along with just one hit allowed.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Norse did damage early with two runs in the top of the second. Odom blasted a triple to center field to plate Shaneyfelt and was then quickly driven home off a RBI single up the middle by Simpson as NKU jumped ahead 2-0.
- Youngstown State cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 2-1 game.
- The Penguins tied things up at 2-2 with another run in the bottom of the eighth.
- The hero of the game was McFadden-Ackman who put the Norse right back ahead in the top of the ninth as he sent a ball through the left side for a two-RBI single to give NKU a 4-2 edge.
- McClanahan slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth for his third save of the season to keep Northern Kentucky a perfect 7-0 in Horizon League play.

The Norse and Penguins will run it back with a doubleheader on Friday, March 29. First pitch is set for 1 PM ET.
 
(Please Note: The doubleheader was a change to the schedule with inclement weather on the way to Youngstown on Saturday. Instead of a single game on Friday and Saturday, the two squads will now play a doubleheader on Friday.)
