YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Northern Kentucky baseball fans might want to keep the brooms handy this season as the Norse continued their winning ways with two straight conference victories over Horizon League foe Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon.
The two victories clinched another series sweep for NKU, who has started a perfect 9-0 in Horizon League play. The insane start to the year has propelled the Norse to the top of the conference standings, three and a half games up on the next closest team.
The winning streak not only sets a NKU NCAA Division I record for longest conference winning streak in program history (passing an eight-game run in 2017), but the Norse also hold the fourth-longest active conference win streak in all of NCAA DI baseball.
THE BASICS – GAME ONE
FINAL: Northern Kentucky – 8, Youngstown State – 7 (9 innings)
LOCATION: Eastwood Field – Youngstown, Ohio

Liam McFadden-Ackman went 3-for-5 at the dish with two RBI and a walk.

Treyvin Moss went off once again with a 3-for-5 performance that included a RBI, two runs scored and a base on balls.

Brennan Rowe posted a big ball game with a 1-for-4 showing. He recorded two RBI, two runs scored and a walk.

John Odom (1-for-4, RBI, one run, one base on balls) and
Bryce Miller (one RBI) also drove in runs for NKU, respectively.

Cleary Simpson (1-for-5, one run, one walk),
Tyler Shaneyfelt (1-for-3, one run scored, two bases on balls) and
Logen Devenport (1-for-5, one run) all came around to score for the Norse.

Aaron Massie picked up the win in relief, his second of the season.
- Northern Kentucky could not be stopped on the basepaths with seven steals in the game. Odom and Moss led the way with two apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- As has been the case on much of the winning streak, Northern Kentucky struck first in the top of the third to jump ahead 1-0.
- Youngstown State responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame and another two in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 4-1 contest.
- The Nose fought right back with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth to cut the YSU lead to 4-3.
- The Penguins tried to pull away with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 6-3.
- Northern Kentucky wasn't messing around as NKU answered right away with a four-run top of the eighth to pull ahead at 7-6.
- Youngstown State sent the game to extras with a run in the bottom of the ninth.
- The Norse completed the comeback, their second thriller in a row, with a run in the top of the tenth.
- The Penguins went down quietly in the bottom half of the inning to give NKU the 8-7 win.

Tyler Shaneyfelt (2-for-3, two RBI, one run, two walks),
Logen Devenport (1-for-5, one RBI, one run),
John Odom (2-for-4, one RBI, one base on balls) and
Zacarias Salinas (RBI) all knocked in runs for the Norse in the game two win.

Treyvin Moss added a near perfect 3-for-4 outing with two runs scored and a walk.

Liam McFadden-Ackman had a big game with a 1-for-1 performance. He finished the contest with two runs scored and four bases on balls as he reached base in every at-bat.

Kyle Klingenbeck also came around to score for the Norse.

Clay Brock picked up a big quality start as he went seven strong innings with just six hits and two earned runs allowed. The Liberty Township, Ohio native struck out six batters in the contest to collect his fourth victory already this season.

Jared Teke recorded the multi-inning save as he closed out the game with two shutout frames. He let up just two hits and notched three punch outs.
- Just like in the opener, Northern Kentucky was a force on the base paths with five more swipes. Moss once again led the squad with two steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Northern Kentucky got a run in the top of the first, but Youngstown State answered right back in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
- NKU tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second.
- The Norse extended their advantage with two more runs in the top of the fifth to make it a 4-2 game.
- The Penguins tried to respond with a run in the bottom half of the frame to cut the NKU edge to 4-3.
- Northern Kentucky broke the game open with a three-run top of the seventh to take a commanding 7-3 lead.
- Youngstown State once again tried to answer with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but NKU got another insurance run in the top of the ninth to close out the 8-4 victory.
NEXT UP
The Norse hit the road for a quick trip up to Dayton on Tuesday, April 2. First pitch is set for 3 PM ET and the non-conference clash will be played in front of a national audience on ESPN+.
