CLEVELAND – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer program went and got hot at the perfect time as the Norse continued their strong run with a 4-0 blowout win over Horizon League foe Cleveland State inside Krenzler Field on Thursday evening.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 4, Cleveland State – 0
LOCATION: Krenzler Field – Cleveland, Ohio
RECORDS: NKU: 5-6-0 (2-1-0), CSU: 0-9-1 (0-3-0)
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- It was a game of firsts as
Kaya Vogt,
Erykah Cornett,
Sofia Wilmes and
Riley Evans all scored their first goals of the season in the 4-0 dub.
-
Caitlin Evans,
Natalie Newman,
Megan Molner,
Gabi Folino and
Avery Mueller all put up an assist in the win, respectively.
-
Tristen Cross,
Grace Kostohryz and the Norse defense combined for the clean sheet. NKU allowed just a single shot on target over the match's 90 minutes of play.
- After one of the hardest schedules to start a season in NKU's NCAA Division I history, the Norse have now won two straight matches and four of their last five contests overall to put themselves right back into the race for the Horizon League crown.
- It was the most goals scored in a game since NKU picked up a 4-1 win over Green Bay back on October 5, 2023.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vogt got the scoring started in the 15th minute. The Norse went on a run and after a cross, the ball bounced to Vogt at the top of the box and she buried it into the top corner of the net to give NKU the early 1-0 lead.
- Northern Kentucky struck again in the 36th minute. Like their opening goal, the Norse took advantage of a turnover and went on a full-field run. Newman and Molner pushed the ball up the field and Cornett one-timed in between the keeper's five-hole for the finish to make it a 2-0 contest.
- That is where the score stayed as the matched headed into the half at 2-0.
- While NKU kept the pressure up throughout the final 45 minutes of action, they wouldn't add to their lead until the 84th minute.
- The Norse would add to their advantage in a big way though as both Wilmes and Evans netted late-game tallies to close out the 4-0 victory.
