Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Norse Men's Basketball grabs second straight victory behind 28 points from Dilling

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Northern Kentucky men's basketball returned home to Truist Arena on Sunday afternoon, taking on the IU Indy Jaguars.

The two sides squared off previously on December 7, with the Norse eking out a road victory, 66-64. Sunday's matchup saw another close victory for the Norse, winning 71-67 in the penultimate home game of the regular season.

Josh Dilling led the Norse offensively with 28 points, setting a new season-high. Dilling also knocked down seven threes, which tied a season-best mark he set on December 15 against Norfolk State.

With the win, Northern Kentucky clinched a first round home game in the Barbasol Horizon League Tournament, which will take place on Tuesday, March 4th.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky - 71, IU Indy - 67
LOCATION: Truist Arena (Highland Heights, KY)
RECORDS: Northern Kentucky: 14-15 (9-9 Horizon) | IU Indy: 9-20 (5-13 Horizon)

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
  • Josh Dilling's 28 points led all scorers, as he let it fly from deep, going 7-15 from downtown. 17 of his points came in the second half. Dan Gherezgher built off of a 17-point game against Wright State with 15 on Sunday, going 6-13 from the field and hitting 3 threes. Gherezgher also grabbed seven boards and dished out four assists.
  • Trey Robinson picked up 13 points, adding  eight rebounds and five assists.
  • Sam Vinson grabbed eight rebounds, recorded five assists and scored 5 points. He also recorded a game-high plus/minus of +13.
  • After shooting just 35.1% from the field in the first half, the Norse turned it up in the second, shooting 57.7% and 50.0% from three.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Norse really struggled to shoot the three ball early, making just one of their first 12 attempts. Despite the troubles from deep, NKU was able to stay in the game with solid defense and limited IU Indy to just three offensive rebounds in the first half. Down seven with just over eight to go in the first, the Norse went on a 9-0 run to take the lead. Dilling hit a two-point jumper as the final ticks came off the clock as NKU entered halftime up three.
  • NKU stayed hot out of the halftime break, taking a 12-point lead as they attacked the paint. The Jaguars were able to respond with some sharp shooting from deep, cutting it to seven, then kept chipping away by attacking inside. An off-steal layup at the 4:03 mark reduced their deficit to just five.
  • Northern Kentucky was able to keep the Jaguars at bay with good clock management and back-to-back threes from Dilling, then held on defensively for the home victory.
