Norse Softball Sweeps Opening Day Doubleheader

CLINTON, S.C. – Northern Kentucky University Norse Softball opened up the 2025 season on Friday afternoon, battling George Washington and Presbyterian at the Pinnacle Blue Hose Invitational, with the two contests both ending in Norse victories. However, those two victories did not come in similar ways, as Northern Kentucky battled in a low-scoring contest in game one, eventually pulling away in extra innings. Game two against the Blue Hose saw NKU jump out to an early lead and never trail in a run-rule victory.

THE BASICS (GAME ONE)
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 5, George Washington– 2 (nine innings)
LOCATION: PC Softball Complex - Clinton, S.C.
RECORDS: NKU 1-0 (0-0 HL), GW 1-1 (0-0 A10)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brooklyn Ballis contained the George Washington offense in a complete game win, allowing seven hits, three walks, and two earned runs in the victory. Ballis also struck out a pair of batters in the victory.
- Three Norse recorded multiple hits - Jena Rhoads (2-5), Olivia Pastin (2-4), and Lexy Morris (2-4).
- NKU recorded nine hits in the game, all of those hits being singles.
- No Norse player scored multiple runs or had multiple RBIs in the game, a true team effort.
- The Northern Kentucky offense recorded more walks than strikeouts, drawing six bases on balls compared to five strikeouts. Trinity Robertson walked twice in the game.

NORSE NOTES
- Both offenses stayed quiet until the GW got going in the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off double. A sacrifice bunt followed by a single brought in the Revolutionaries' first run of the game.
- NKU loaded the bases in the top of the sixth and capitalized on their scoring opportunity as Stella Wulker drew an RBI walk, then Morris smacked a single to left-center that gave the Norse their first lead of the season.
- GW pulled even at their last chance as a one-out sacrifice fly brought in the game-tying run.
- In extras, neither team was able to score in the eighth, mostly thanks to some double-play heroics from the NKU defense on what would have been a game-winning sacrifice bunt.
- In the ninth, NKU's Rhoads, Beatty, Pastin, and Gearld recorded four straight singles that gave the Norse a 5-2 lead. Ballis closed things out with three straight outs to give the Norse their first victory of 2025.
- It marked the first extra-inning game for the Norse since April 10th, also a nine-inning win - a 6-4 triumph over IU Indianapolis.

THE BASICS (GAME TWO)
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 10, Presbyterian – 2 (six innings)
LOCATION: PC Softball Complex - Clinton, S.C.
RECORDS: NKU 2-0 (0-0 HL), PC 1-1 (0-0 Big South)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Four Norse recorded multi-hit games as NKU powered past the Blue Hose. Jena Rhoads (2-5, 3B), Campbell Beatty (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R), Stella Wulker (2-4, HR, 2 RBI), and Charly Koehler (2-2, 2 R) all had great performances.
- While Northern Kentucky relied on singles in game one, they recorded five extra-base hits in game two. Pastin and Morris, who both hit doubles, joined Rhoads, Beatty, and Wulker in that club.
- Alicia Flores looked dominant on the mound in her first game since February 17, 2024. Flores struck out six in six innings, allowing four hits and four walks.

- The Norse again drew more walks than strikeouts, drawing eight walks to just three strikeouts.

NORSE NOTES
- Jena Rhoads led off the game with a triple, and that set the tone for the Norse offense. They ended up scoring a pair of runs in the first off of an errant reception on an infield grounder, ending the first inning up 2-0.

- Campbell Beatty's double brought a pair of runners home, then another PC error saw the Norse lead expand to five in just two frames.

- In the fourth, an RBI groundout from Mack Brow grew the lead to six, then Stella Wulker buried an early dagger with a two-run shot into left field.

-The Norse coasted the rest of the way to a 10-2 early victory, ending things in six innings.

NEXT UP
The Norse will continue play in the Pinnacle Blue Hose Invitational on Saturday with a 12:15 matchup against Morehead State before taking on Presbyterian again at 4:45.
