Flores’ No-Hitter, Norse Bats Lead NKU to Doubleheader Sweep over Green Bay

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.  – Northern Kentucky University Norse Softball opened up Horizon League play on Friday afternoon, taking on Green Bay in a doubleheader.

In game one, a five-inning no-hitter from Alicia Flores and seven runs in the fifth powered NKU to a run-rule victory. Things got tighter in the second game, as the Norse used all three pitchers in a 9-8 barnburner, just holding on for the win.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 8, Green Bay – 0
LOCATION: Frank Ignatius Grein Field - Highland Heights, Ky.
RECORDS: NKU 9-13 (1-0 HL), GB 6-9 (0-1 HL)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Alicia Flores dominated inside the circle, pitching five hitless innings and only allowing just a pair of walks. It was Flores' second career no-hitter, as she also did so against Detroit Mercy on 4/15/2023. The senior also added five strikeouts in game one.
- Northern Kentucky had a monster offensive game as well, mostly behind a seven-run fifth inning that sealed the game. NKU recorded 13 hits as four players recorded multi-hit games.
- Brielle DiMemmo went 3-3 with a double, driving in two runs and scoring one.
- Marley Gearld went 2-3 with a pair of doubles in the game, driving in one run.
- Emma Ginn and Mack Brow both went 2-3, each hitting a pair of singles.

NORSE NOTES
- Flores started off on fire, allowing just one walk in her first three innings. The Norse got runners in scoring position in each of their first three tries, but the scoreless tie held until the fourth.
- After a one-out single from Emma Ginn in the fourth, she was driven all the way home by Gearld, who doubled in the right-center gap. Gearld was thrown out on the play attempting to go for the triple. NKU looked to add more in the fourth, loading the bases, but a lineout from Rhoads moved things to the fifth.
- Green Bay had a shot to tie things up in the top of the fifth, as Flores hit the first batter of the frame before the Phoenix bunted the runner into scoring position. Flores coaxed a pair of flyouts to end the inning, which was the Phoenix's last attempt at the plate in game one.
- Northern Kentucky's bats couldn't be stopped in the fifth, as they recorded seven hits and seven runs before even recording an out. Olivia Pastin started it off with a double, and Trinity Robertson followed that up with a walk. Six straight hits ensued as the Norse torched multiple Phoenix pitchers to expand their lead to seven. Mack Brow scored on an infield grounder to end the game with a run-rule victory for NKU.

THE BASICS (GAME TWO)
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 9, Green Bay – 8
LOCATION: Frank Ignatius Grein Field - Highland Heights, Ky.
RECORDS: NKU 10-13 (2-0 HL), GB 6-10 (0-2 HL)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Seven different Norse recorded a hit in game two, as Gearld led the way as she went 2-3 from the plate with a double.
- Mack Brow went 1-1 with a double and a pair of walks, crossing home plate all three times she got on base.
- Emma Ginn went 1-3 with a triple.
- Trinity Robertson and Campbell Beatty both went 1-2 with doubles. Beatty also drove in a pair of runs and scored twice.

NORSE NOTES
- Both teams went down in order in the first inning, before both teams got runners in scoring position without driving them in in the second.
- The Phoenix struck first, getting a run on the board off a triple followed by a fielder's choice. NKU tied it up in the third, as Brow walked, got to second on a bunt, and then came home courtesy of an RBI single from Jena Rhoads
- NKU took the lead in the fourth as Wulker crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
- The back-and-forth affair continued when Green Bay responded with a three-spot in the fifth, but NKU tied things up in their half of the frame thanks to a sacrifice fly and fielding error.
- Flores relieved Ballis in the top of the sixth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning to give the Norse a chance to take back the lead, which they capitalized on. Ginn and Gearld started off the inning with back-to-back extra-base hits, giving NKU a 5-4 lead. The Norse loaded the bases with a pair of walks, and Beatty lined one out in the left-center gap to expand NKU's lead to three. Two more RBI groundouts gave the Norse a 9-4 lead entering the seventh.
- Things got a little shaky for NKU early on in the seventh, as they loaded the bases with no outs to start it off. A timely bases-clearing double from the Phoenix followed, cutting the deficit to two. Another single brought NKU's lead to just one, then a walk put the lead-taking run on base. The Norse defense and freshman pitcher Kyndall Ford held on, getting a groundout to end the game and send the Norse to a 2-0 start in Horizon League play.
